ABOUT NEW HORIZONS COUNSELING

Established in 1980, New Horizons Counseling is a unique substance abuse rehab in Mililani, Hawaii, utilizing an evidence-based approach to treatment that does not center on the 12-Steps. The facility’s offerings include an intensive outpatient program (IOP), regular outpatient, and individual and marriage counseling. New Horizons Counseling also offers a week-long “Treatment Camp” where clients are engaged in residential treatment in a camp-like setting.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the center’s website, outpatient programming takes a positive, practical approach to recovery and utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help clients take control of their addiction. Over the course of one or two months, the goal is to treat addiction with minimal disruption to the client’s life. Neither drug therapy nor hospitalization is used.

The six-day Treatment Camp is one of the facility’s most popular treatment options. Located on the premises of Camp Mokuleia, just 40 minutes from downtown Honolulu, the camp only accepts a small group of people per session in order to facilitate an intimate setting for recovery. Operated as an intensive inpatient program, each day is filled with engaging counseling sessions designed to help adult clients understand the root causes of their addiction and acquire the tools to overcome it. Participants are encouraged to spend time reflecting on their experiences and take part in fun recreational activities, such as a blind obstacle course and beachside campfires.

New Horizons Counseling provides weekend-long retreats for couples seeking marriage and relationship counseling. To facilitate personalized attention, these retreats are limited to two couples at a time.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s website notes the executive director, owner, and primary counselor is a certified addictions and recovery specialist, certified wellness counselor, and certified marriage and life coach with more than 20 years of experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

At Treatment Camp, clients are housed in private bedrooms with bathrooms. Three meals are served per day in the dining hall, and clients also have access to the rest of the lodge, which features a comfortable family room with a TV, according to the center’s website.
