West Central Human Service Center

West Central Human Service Center (WCHSC), located in Bismarck, N.D., offers residential and outpatient treatment to children, adolescents, adults, and families seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility serves a ten-county area surrounding Bismarck, and medical detox services are available on-site.

WCHSC’s substance abuse treatment begins with an evaluation to properly place prospective clients into the appropriate treatment program. Those in need of a supportive living arrangements or an ongoing therapeutic environment will benefit from residential services.

Those in need of more acute care may receive medical detox and medically-supervised residential treatment. There are eight non-hospital facilities in North Dakota that offer residential detox. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) may be utilized to minimize withdrawal symptoms, while
medication management services may be utilized to stabilize dually diagnosed clients.

Primary treatment services are available on two different levels: low intensity outpatient and day treatment. The low intensity outpatient track consists of two sessions per week for up to 16 weeks, whereas day treatment ranges from five to eight hours per day, four to five days per week, and typically lasts between three and five weeks. Both programs include individual, group and family counseling, as well as case management and vocational rehabilitation services.

If necessary, domestic violence and sexual abuse treatment programs may be incorporated into core programming. Relapse prevention and aftercare services are available after a client successfully completes a treatment program.

WCHSC’s treatment team includes professionals trained in the following specialties: psychiatry, psychology, addiction counseling, social work, counseling, case management, nursing, and vocational rehabilitation. Some of these services may be provided through contracts.

The facility’s website states that its residential services provide living support for clients in residential and outpatient programs. These options may include residential group care, semi-independent living arrangements, or crisis residential services.

The two alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date gave the facility positive reviews. Alumni gave four- or perfect five-star ratings for the connectivity with loved ones, level of family participation, the facility’s cleanliness, and available counseling options. Both alumni also praised the facility’s counselors. “Amazing counselors, good people,” one alum wrote, while alum S.L. added: “Excellent counselor.”

WCHSC offers sliding scale fees based on income and household size. However, it also provides services regardless of a client’s ability to pay. Only 21 facilities in North Dakota offer services to clients that cannot pay. Insurance is accepted, and there is no charge for vocational rehabilitation or developmental disability case management services.

WSHSC is working in the community to provide educational services and change how the community views addiction. New initiatives are being launched to show the community that addiction can be treated and that WSHSC has the resources to help clients through the treatment process.
