ABOUT BARTELS COUNSELING SERVICES, INC.
Located in Sioux Falls, D.K., Bartels Counseling Services, Inc. provides outpatient-based treatment programs and continuing care services for adults and teens seeking support for issues of substance use, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring difficulties. The center also runs a safety program for DUI offenders and counseling services for children and their families.
The center is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, evening and weekend sessions may be scheduled by appointment.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
To develop an individualized treatment plan, a client may first undergo an initial psychiatric evaluation and/or substance abuse assessment. Depending on their needs, clients may enroll in either intensive outpatient (IOP) or traditional outpatient programs, which is often determined during this initial assessment. Programming makes use of a range of evidence-based treatment approaches to help clients acquire and maintain mental stability and sobriety.
Counseling is the primary approach to treatment. Through participation in group and individual sessions, clients learn to identify irrational thinking patterns that contribute to addictive behaviors and/or mental or emotional instability. The facility’s webpage maintains: “Therapy helps in creating and sustaining positive connections between individuals, peers and family members while supporting a substance-free lifestyle.” While addressing these issues, therapy also tackles major topics such as relapse prevention, spirituality, and stress, and time management. Once a client a completes outpatient treatment, they may proceed with the center’s Aftercare and Recovery Program.
Seeing family involvement as a key component to a successful recovery, the center encourages families to attend counseling and educational classes. The goal of family involvement is to create a family unit that is “healthy, strong and well developed.”

FINANCING
Bartels Counseling Services, Inc. accepts private insurance, Medicaid, self-pay, and South Dakota state funding. Fees are determined by the type of counseling sessions. For instance, family counseling sessions are typically covered by insurance, while couples’ counseling may not be.
