ABOUT TALLGRASS RECOVERY & SOBER LIVING HOMES

Situated on the rural outskirts of Sioux Falls, S.D., Tallgrass Recovery & Sober Living Homes provides community-based, mentor-focused programming for adults struggling with substance abuse. Our nonprofit organization offers a 30-day residential program and gender-specific sober living accommodations. Medical detox services are not available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Tallgrass Recovery’s 30-day residential program is community-based and deeply rooted in 12-step principles. A typical day includes scheduled meditation, mandatory chores, educational workshops, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings, both on- and off-site. Unlike other facilities, Tallgrass Recovery does not administer psychological counseling or medical treatment as part of its services. Instead, the facility offers a community-based program to help guide recovery; each client is assigned a mentor (often a program alum) who meets with them three times a week.

Tallgrass Recovery’s sober living facilities provide extra support and structure for clients who are early in their recovery. The organization runs two gender-specific homes: Norton, a women’s residence, and Doodler, a home for men. According to the center’s website, there is often a waiting list for both sober living homes. During their stays, clients continue attending 12-step meetings and working with sponsors.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Tallgrass Recovery is governed by a board of directors and managed by a small administrative team. According to the center’s website, the facility is staffed by 200 volunteer members of the recovery community, about 25% of whom are former clients of Tallgrass Recovery. Staff also include culinary workers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Tallgrass Recovery’s sober living facilities are located on 10 acres of naturally landscaped property. Each features shared bedrooms and a common space furnished with a fireplace and upholstered chairs. Clients are expected to complete chores during their stay.

The center’s sober living facilities are located in residential neighborhoods that offer easy access to bus lines, shopping, and local recovery meetings. Each client shares a bedroom with one other client. The monthly rental fee includes utilities, local phone service, and cable.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Each of the three alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date noted that they would recommend Tallgrass Recovery’s program to a friend or family member seeking help. All three individuals rated the center’s treatment effectiveness five out of five stars, and two alumni highlighted the helpful recovery tools they received while enrolled in the program. “They gave me the tools to stay sober for 5 years now,” Alum Mark wrote in his review.

The respondents also rated the facility four and five stars for its accommodations, meals, and cleanliness. The center’s holistic offerings, its leisure options, and its connectivity received mixed reviews from the surveyed alumni. However, all three alumni offered high four- and five-star ratings for the staff’s level of experience and training.

On the facility’s Facebook page, which may be curated, 57 reviewers to date rated it an average 4.6 out of five stars, with 46 perfect reviews. Three reviewers who left commentary spoke positively about treatment and staff. Reviewer John wrote: “A wonderful organization with deeply caring staff.”

Tallgrass Recovery & Sober Living Homes Reviews

The Executive Director is a very discriminatory human being. I would not submit any one I love to his behaviors. He is able to convince people to their face he is about recovery and saving lives. When in reality he is about is own motives and ego. He is a disgrace to Tall Grass and the reputation they have spent years building. His lack of integrity has lowered the public opinion of this once amazing facility. I hope the board of directors will listen to the letters as they begin to pour in and save Tall Grass so valuable lives can continue to be saved. This place has served so many suffering alcoholics in the past and has a high success rate and there is no room for someone that does not have the best interest in mind 110%.Official Facility Response:Tallgrass has a new Executive Director: Jon Sommervold 605-368-5559 jsommervold@tallgrassrecovery.org
