ABOUT SITKA COUNSELING AND PREVENTION SERVICES

Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services is a nonprofit agency providing treatment for substance use and other mental health disorders in the Sitka, Baranof Island, and Yakutat areas of southeastern Alaska. Holistic services ranging from outpatient to residential rehab are offered for families and individuals of all ages. Additional programs include care for clients living with long-term mental health challenges.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Practicing a “no wrong door” policy, Sitka Counseling offers initial care to any individual seeking help. The facility’s website emphasizes attention to addressing needs for medical care, housing, legal services, spiritual support, and employment along with addiction treatment and mental health care. Staff members provide referrals to and collaborate with other related community resources in serving clients. All levels of treatment are harm reduction- and improvement-oriented.

Adult men’s and women’s four- to six-month residential programs provide low-intensity, peer-supported rehab. Residents receive therapy for co-occurring mental illness and substance use while developing support networks and skills for employment and independent sober living.

Adolescent clients struggling with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders participate in outpatient treatment.

The facility also offers individual, couple, and family counseling, parenting classes, and employee assistance programs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Treatment team members include master’s level therapists and substance abuse counselors. The facility’s website notes the importance of diverse staffing and employees are able to assist clients in multiple languages.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Limited information is provided on the facility’s website regarding the living arrangements and related offerings of the men’s and women’s residential programs. Residents are responsible for planning and preparing meals, which are shared as a group in the evenings.

The one individual polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing represented general accommodations and the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep as strongly satisfactory, with ratings of four out of five stars for each. Opportunities for leisure and exercise activity and policies regarding connection with the outside during treatment fared less favorably, with two and three stars, respectively.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former clients or affiliated friends or family members. Reviews on Google were positive, with three reviews offering perfect five-star reviews of the facility. The only reviewer to leave commentary wrote: “Changing lives, one at a time!”

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole former employee who provided Best-rehabs.com with feedback would not recommend working at Sitka Counseling. The staff member gave most aspects of the facility evaluated – aside from accommodations, which are discussed elsewhere in this review – mediocre to poor ratings of two and three out of five stars. Overall treatment effectiveness and the level of staff training and experience were rated three stars apiece, while options in counseling approaches received just two stars. The reviewer indicated that treatment was affordable.

FINANCING

The facility’s website does not list fees for services but does indicate that both state funding and private funds help to cover costs.
