ABOUT STATEN ISLAND UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

In the borough of New York City for which it is named, Staten Island University Hospital, part of Northwell Health, operates two large campuses (North and South). Substance abuse services are offered at the Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Chemical Dependency on the South campus, along with other behavioral health and specialty programs. The facility provides medical detox, a methadone maintenance program, short-term inpatient treatment, and outpatient services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Patients are assessed by medical and counseling staff and admitted into the appropriate program and level of care based on criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. During the intake process, motivational interviewing is used to identify a client’s hopes and goals.

Treatment is individualized based on a client’s needs. Inpatient detoxification treatment typically lasts three to six days. The program is medically supervised and the approach is based on the type of substance the client has been using. The methadone maintenance treatment program (MMTP) helps clients step down through the detox process.

Clients may participate in chemical dependency treatment at other programs offered at the facility. The one alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing indicated inpatient residents receive up to three sessions of group therapy a day, along with individual counseling sessions.

There are 12-step meetings on-site, as well as educational and vocational services and referrals, so that clients can prepare for a productive life after rehab, even while in treatment.

Outpatient counseling services are offered to clients and family members. These include early recovery/aftercare counseling, relapse-prevention education, codependency counseling, and recovery readiness groups. Groups are offered for women and deaf/hard of hearing individuals. DWI courses, counseling for adult children of alcoholics, and a dual diagnosis program that includes psychiatric evaluation and consultation also are available. On-site childcare is offered for outpatient clients.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staten Island University Hospital’s chemical dependency programs are accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. A medical director credentialed by the American Society of Addiction Medicine leads the treatment staff, which includes physicians and addiction nurses, as well as certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors.
