Access Hospital Dayton

ABOUT ACCESS HOSPITAL

Located in Dayton, Ohio, Access Hospital is a freestanding treatment center that offers short-term inpatient care for adults struggling with a primary psychiatric crisis, chemical dependency, or co-occurring disorders. Outpatient programs on the hospital’s campus are also available to all ages and, if necessary, medically supervised detoxification is available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, patients meet with a clinician for an initial biopsychosocial assessment, which helps determine a diagnosis and appropriate treatment approach. Access Hospital utilizes medication-assisted therapy (Suboxone, Vivtrol) to minimize withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid or benzodiazepine dependency. Once a patient completes the detoxification phase of treatment, clinicians help clients to slowly taper-off the medication regimen, typically within four weeks.

Along with medication-assisted therapy and crisis stabilization, patients recovering from chemical dependency also receive a range of rehabilitative programming to promote lasting sobriety. Patients participate in individual, group, and family counseling sessions, as well as attend educational workshops on substance abuse, healthy living skills, nutrition, coping skills, and relapse prevention techniques. Best-rehabs.com survey results indicated patients may also be introduced to 12-Step. In addition to core programming, individuals struggling with co-occurring issues may receive ongoing medication management to help address mental health concerns.

Programming to treat a primary psychiatric disorder consists of pharmacological intervention and ongoing medication management, individual and group therapy, and educational classes on stress management and coping skills. Upon discharge, case managers help to form comprehensive aftercare plans, which may include referrals to community-based treatment providers, such as a psychiatrists or counselor. Patients may also be encouraged to enroll into the hospital’s outpatient program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Access Hospital employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse and mental health counselors, nurses, social workers, case managers, and behavioral health technicians.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Access Hospital offers patients a structured, supervised environment and 24/7 access to medical attention. To individualize treatment, patients struggling with chemical dependency are housed in a separate unit from individuals struggling with a primary psychiatric issue. The hospital features a basketball court and outside sitting patio. Although regular meals are offered, patients may cook their own meals or have special meals delivered.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In addition, she described the accommodations as being jail-like.

Former patient Matt disagreed, offering a five-star rating for the facility’s accommodations and the staff’s level of training. “Good program but needs better holistic offerings,” he wrote.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing also reported a lack of holistic treatment, rating this metric with just one star, though they offered a four-star rating for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders. Also providing four stars for the facility’s discharge policies, the loved one cited the outpatient program as a strength of the facility and praised the facility’s communication with families. “It was a comfortable open place,” they wrote, but cited the lack of groups and activities as a facility weakness.
