ABOUT HOMEWARD BOUND

Homeward Bound is the largest nonprofit substance abuse and mental health treatment agency in Texas. Since 1980, this organization has been providing outpatient services and gender-specific residential programs to individuals struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. They offer medically monitored detoxification services and a sober living facility for male alumni. The agency also operates Trinity Center, a partner facility in El Paso.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Homeward Bound utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the foundation of its treatment approach. Clients can expect a holistic approach that includes medical care and psychotherapy, tailored to each individual’s personal circumstances. The agency incorporates evidence-based treatment approaches, primarily through education and group therapy sessions. Treatment modalities include motivational interviewing (MI), trauma-oriented Seeking Safety, family systems counseling, parenting skills training, anger management, one-on-one counseling, and participation in 12-step meetings. Recovery coaching is also provided throughout treatment and to alumni.

Homeward Bound’s residential programs have no appointment requirements for admission, and outpatient treatment has both appointment and walk-in options. The agency offers a five-to-seven-day inpatient detox program on a first-come, first-served basis. Residential clients typically stay for 14 to 28 days, while intensive outpatient programming involves 18 sessions over four to five weeks. The two levels of supportive outpatient programming include 20 sessions over 10 weeks and aftercare, which meets once a week for eight weeks. Homeward Bound also offers specialized residential substance abuse programs for HIV-positive clients (60 days) and women (60 to 90 days).

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Homeward Bound provides services in both English and Spanish. The agency’s leaders include a master’s-level pastor and a college instructor. There is a full-time physician on-site, and agency nurses are trained in addiction recovery treatment. The staff also includes clinical social workers and licensed chemical dependency counselors.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Homeward Bound’s residential campus, located in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, has plans to move to a new main facility. The current residences can accommodate up to 30 men and 16 women. For women in need of intensive residential treatment, the program allows mothers to remain with their children.

Feedback from Best-rehabs.com indicated mixed satisfaction regarding accommodations and amenities, with ratings of 2.9 for general accommodations and facility cleanliness/upkeep, three stars for meals and nutrition, and 2.3 for exercise and leisure activities.

  • Well, first of all you have to wait nearly a week to get in, IF you are able to get in at all, which I was one of the luckier ones to have the displeasure of getting in. Once you are in, you don't get to leave. No visitors, and no outside communication. So basically you are in jail, only the food is worse and the sleeping arrangements are worse also. So if that alone doesn't give you incentive enough to get clean, then I don't know. I ended up leaving after a week and getting treatment at an outpatient facility that did wonders for me. I have been clean for over 4 months now from all drugs, and about to enter college for the first time after 20 years. So, you tell me, are in-patient rehabs any more effective than outpatient facilities? Well, it depends on if you really want help or not. If you are serious about getting clean, then it doesn't matter where you go, as long as you stick to your own principles and focus on what you really want. Some people have been doing drugs for so long that they are afraid of getting clean altogether. I think it depends on what you want inside, not where you are are what someone else can do for you. In the case of this place though, they are just a government system that is just broken.

  • Mentoring was nice but there needs to be more time in the facility. Counselors were friendly and knowledgeable.

  • One on one time with patient was a strength of the facility; however, not enough staff. I loved the place...the only thing I didn't like was the detox part I was out of it, like a zombie.

  • Offers free treatment (paid by the State). This rehab is for those without income, or those who do not have insurance and cannot pay out of pocket. The building is extremely old, the elevators do not work, staff is not properly trained, almost non-existant medical care, and meals consist of donated food (Usually expired). They do however, offer a solid recovery program - it is simply no frills and not at all comfortable. Please see my answers regarding strength and weaknesses of the facility.

  • Their 12 step program was great but they need better outside activities. My dad has been clean for 3 years because of this program.
