ABOUT MALIBU BEACH RECOVERY CENTERS
A program of RiverMend Health, Malibu Recovery Centers (MBRC) are a group of exclusive drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities located in Southern California. Oceanfront homes, highly trained and compassionate staff, and an integrative approach to evidence-based and holistic treatments support the recovery process for men and women seeking lifelong sobriety. Medically supervised detoxification, residential programming, transitional living, outpatient treatment, and treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders like depression and anxiety are all available through personalized recovery plans.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
MBRC combines traditional Western treatment methods with holistic practices of physical fitness, creative arts, and spiritual-based therapies. When clients arrive at one of the facilities, they’ll receive a thorough assessment and work with staff members to create a personalized treatment plan.
Addiction treatment may include a combination of 12-step support meetings, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yoga, group and individual counseling, and trauma, drama, music, animal-assisted, or art therapies. According to MBRC’s webpage, programs work to “restore brain chemistry” and “rejuvenate the body’s reward system.” Clients meet with their treatment team on a weekly basis to discuss progress made and any adjustments that may be required.
All program options, from residential to partial hospitalization (PHP) to intensive outpatient (IOP), provide a gender-specific environment and daily curriculum of exercise, skills development, counseling, individualized treatment, and education. Family involvement is also highly encouraged.
Another integral component to the MBRC rehabilitation process is its Malibu Recovery Diet, which was developed to raise dopamine levels naturally. Chef-led cooking classes provide professional instruction in nutrition and healthy meal preparation.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
In keeping with its treatment approach, the staff is also multidisciplinary. The staff leadership includes a psychiatrist with dozens of affiliations with medical schools, research institutions, and hospitals, clinical psychologists with diverse treatment specializations, nurses, and healthcare administrators. A primary care physician, licensed addiction counselors, yoga instructors, and a professional chef are also on staff.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Accommodations at each of the MBRC locations are comfortable, spacious, and luxurious. Clients stay in private or semi-private rooms, and have access to gyms, recreational grounds, pools, fireplaces, and communal living rooms.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Alumni feedback is mixed. In their Best-rehabs.com survey, an anonymous reviewer urged others to “Please do not go here.” “They will tell you your stay is covered by insurance and then slam you a year later for $5,000 of bills!”
On Yelp, nine reviews provided a mix of personal opinions and experiences. John D. wrote: “I like their multidisciplinary and holistic approach. Very healthy, lots of exercise, and great healthy food.”[1] Alum D.S. shared their success story: “I finally got sober at Malibu Beach Recovery Center.” D.S. also noted that MBRC provided her with “the best combination” of yoga, AA meetings and in-house therapists and doctors.
Others expressed dissatisfaction with the balance of traditional therapies offered. Former client Chad, for example, claimed that the program simply had “too much yoga” and a “staff that has no idea about anything” while Michael H. wrote: “you see a therapist ONCE a week and its ALL aa meetings.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Of the 12 reviewers surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date, all but one mention compassionate, caring staff and individualized, varied therapies as strengths. Though they considered the facility’s insurance policy a weakness, E.A.D., a loved one, held in high regard MBRC’s gender-responsive treatment and “full continuum of care from detox to sober living.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
Eight staff members wrote to Best-rehabs.com, many of whom emphasized the strong staff-to-client ratio. “The program is set up in a manner that allows the client to use and enhance experiences that may be a part of their own daily routines which makes the program uniquely designed to fit the individual,” wrote Dawn. She also noted that staff members are “a continued source of support even after the client returns home.”
