ABOUT QUINNIPIAC DRUG TREATMENT CENTERS – MORAL RECONATION THERAPY (MRT)
Located in Hamden, Connecticut, a suburb 15 minutes north of New Haven, Quinnipiac Drug Treatment Centers’ Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) program is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that aids incarcerated individuals and those struggling with addiction.
The program’s webpage describes MRT as a “practical program that utilizes homework assignments and group exercises.” Since its inception in 1988, numerous studies have been published highlighting the program’s efficacy in improving moral reasoning and reducing relapse rates.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Quinnipiac’s MRT program addresses addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. The program consists of several distinct steps, exposing clients to practices and techniques from various forms of psychotherapy:
1. Clients work closely with trained therapists to identify their existing patterns of belief and thought.
2. Through reasoning and self-challenge, clients may discover that their negative emotions and thought processes are often distorted. Following an assessment of their interpersonal relationships, clients learn to replace negative thoughts with positive and accurate ones.
3. The program focuses on the formation of a more positive identity and the development of a healthy self-concept.
