ABOUT DOVER BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Located on the eastern outskirts of Dover, Del., Dover Behavioral Health System provides residential and outpatient treatment for adolescents and adults struggling with mental health disorders and substance use. The facility offers on-site medical detoxification, as well as treatment for co-occurring disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, Dover Behavioral Health takes a multidisciplinary approach that’s firmly grounded in the 12-step model of recovery and the disease concept of addiction. Residential care for adults and adolescents is intended as a short-term measure. According to a 2016 SAMHSA survey, the facility was only one of four short-term residential treatment centers in Delaware.

To treat is clients, the facility offers education about the nature of addiction and recovery — specifically Recovery Dynamics, an intensive learning guide that helps clients through the 12-step process. Clients also participate in individual, group, and family therapy, relapse prevention workshops, as well art, music, spiritual, and activity therapy. In addition, clients receive medication management as indicated, as well as dietary counseling.

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is available to both adults and adolescents on weekdays during the day or evening. PHP offers many of the same modalities as residential care, plus academic instruction for adolescents and daily psychoeducational groups.

Dover Behavioral Health also offers dedicated programming, through its residential, PHP, and outpatient tracks, for active servicemen and veterans. The treatment programs focus on trauma (including PTSD treatment), family conflict, and adjusting to a new environment. All treatment tracks include individualized aftercare planning.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Dover Behavioral Health’s treatment team includes three staff psychiatrists, along with a director of social work, a director of nursing, a human resources manager, and a hospital administrator.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to the facility’s website, residents live in semi-private rooms with access to an enclosed outdoor courtyard. Out of five stars, the three loved one surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing all gave the facility four- and five-star ratings for its overall cleanliness and upkeep.

Best-rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni. However, reviews sourced from secondary sites were largely negative. Dover Behavioral Health System garnered an average rating of 1.8 out of five stars based on 55 Google reviews.[1] On Facebook, Dover received an average rating of 2.3 out of five stars based on 35 reviews. [2] Common complaints concerned the staff. “MOST of the staff there were not even qualified to work in the facility,”Alexia wrote in a representative review on Google. Likewise, alum Lauren described the staff as “unhelpful at best and negligent at worst.”

All three awarded the facility four or five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and the staff’s level of training and experience. “Clean, secure effective for short term but needs to add longer term,” one anonymous loved one wrote. The loved ones also offered two four-star ratings and a three-star rating for the level of family involvement.

According to the facility’s online brochure, Dover accepts most insurance plans, as well as Medicare, Medicaid, and TriCare.

  • Helped my sister through a time when she was addicted pills thus leading to suicidal tendencies. Very little contact was allowed by family. Dover behavioral health was good for my sister because they did properly diagnosis her and this helped her get further treatment she needed. not just a pill.
