Located in Covington, La., Covington Behavioral Health Hospital (previously known as Greenbriar Behavioral Health Hospital) provides services to clients struggling with a mental health diagnosis or issues with substance use. The center offers inpatient treatment and intensive outpatient program (IOP) to adult and senior clients Detox services are available on-site.


Greenbrier Behavioral Health Hospital’s website indicates the detox program isn’t a standalone program at the center. Clients can detox from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and certain opioid-based medications. Once clients finish the program, they transition into the inpatient program.

The main treatment modalities utilized at the center include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychoeducation, crisis intervention, creative therapy, solution focused therapy, and medication management.

Each inpatient plan is individualized and common elements include individual and group therapy, and family therapy sessions are available upon request. Mental health issues treated include schizophrenia, personality disorders, PTSD, and other issues. Clients may also participate in a variety of group sessions, including process groups, psychoeducation groups, and dietary groups among others.

IOP care benefits individuals who need a step-down level of support following the inpatient program. Clients attend a minimum of six hours of treatment a week.

Family therapy is also available upon request in both inpatient and IOP care. In addition to the center programs, Covington also offers discharge planning services.


According to the center’s website, the treatment team includes psychiatrists, medical psychologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, counselors, activity therapists, dietitians, mental health technicians, social workers certified in gerontology, and physicians certified in forensic psychiatry and addictionology.


The center’s website notes Greenbrier Behavioral Health Hospital has 60 beds. Creative therapies include art, crafts, and music. One loved one polled by rated Covington’s accommodations and amenities two out of five stars and its meals and nutrition three stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has not yet received review coverage from alumni of Covington. The nine reviewers to provide ratings to Google at the time of this writing rated Covington an average four out of five stars, with seven positive reviews and two negative.[1] On Yelp, two alumni to date rated the facility a perfect five stars and three out of five stars.[2]

Reviews in general maintained that the accommodations and nutrition left something to be desired but that staff were generally friendly and gave satisfactory care. On Yelp, alum Claire wrote: “I agree with the previous reviewer about the bad food, but I received great care and help in both the inpatient hospital program and intensive outpatient program. Friendly, caring staff. Aged facility.”


The sole loved one surveyed by at the time of this writing gave Covington a mixed review, rating the facility four out of five stars for its cleanliness and its affordability and three stars for its family participation and its staff’s level of training and experience. However, they rated it only two stars in most metrics including holistic treatment offerings, exercise and leisure options, and counseling options. Loved one A. echoed alumni feedback, writing that although the facility was “clean, relatively inexpensive,” it was also a “not well maintained, shabby, poor facility.”


Staff member Jason, leaving a review on Google, rated Covington only one out of five stars and wrote that he did not have a positive experience while he was employed at Covington.
