ABOUT JOHNS HOPKINS BAYVIEW MEDICAL CENTER

Part of Johns Hopkins HealthCare, Bayview Medical Center of Baltimore offers a range of treatment programs for individuals struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. Along with a 26-bed inpatient unit designed for older adolescents and adults (ages 16+), Bayview offers specialized outpatient-based programs and services for adults, adolescents, and seniors. If necessary, the facility also provides medically monitored detoxification services on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before beginning treatment, patients participate in an initial evaluation to determine an appropriate level of care and individualized treatment approach. If the patient requires detoxification, they may be referred to the hospital’s Chemical Dependency Unit. During inpatient treatment, patients meet with a psychiatrist daily for one-on-one therapy, attend educational presentations, participate in group counseling, and are introduced to the principles and practices of the 12-step model of recovery.

Although inpatient treatment does not have a maximum length of stay, the goal of the short-term inpatient program is to stabilize the individual and refer them to aftercare programs to sustain recovery, such as a vocational rehabilitation program, sober housing, and Bayview’s age- and issue-specific outpatient programs. If applicable, Bayview also facilitates a methadone maintenance program to assist individuals recovering from opioid/opiate addiction.

Outpatient programs at Bayview Medical Center are comprised of individual and group counseling sessions that address underlying issues that may contribute to specific psychiatric disorders and/or addictive behavior, as well as educational sessions on relapse prevention and coping strategies. Upon discharge, clinicians provide aftercare planning to promote sustained sobriety.

Bayview also provides a specialized, outpatient program for pregnant women and young mothers struggling with addiction. During treatment, patients have access to pediatric and obstetric care, and if necessary, on-site housing to ensure the safety of the mother and child.

  • Excellent staff, great group therapy, allowed to keep cell phone, sensitivity to dietary restrictions. No exercise programs, not enough staff. Would recommend for mental health treatment but need more treatment options for substance abuse.
    • Treatment Effectiveness
My loved one was suddenly faced with homelessness, no medical insurance, no money, but a lot of substance abuse and multiple mental health issues. A few years prior, she was a happily married with a great income, beautiful home, etc. Her breakdown was horrible for her. The substance abuse came after the mental health issues, job loss, divorce. She spent the next 2 years trying to get better and went to many treatment centers and always fell apart after the typical few days that hospitals hold people for mental breakdowns. Finally, she found this program, the Johns Hopkins dual diagnosis, which included a long in-patient stay (around 30 days). She responded better there than the many she'd previously tried. They were able to set her up in a monitored sober living house for 6 months after the in-patient program. Without that, she'd have gone back to the streets and likely relapsed and dead. She was on the edge of survival and made a major turnaround.

  • staff was nice and helpful, my brother is still drinking. but the staff is not at fault. they provided good care and options my brother chose not to follow through. i think they need to have a longer in patient stay program. they only kept my brother for three days. it was not enough time for him for the kind of help he needed

  • Ease in getting in. Not enough treatment. 3 days is not enough. they should offer help for people exiting the program. Not for serious cases
