ABOUT TURNING POINT OF WASHINGTON COUNTY

Turning Point of Washington County is an affiliate program of Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Health Foundation, a nonprofit community-based treatment provider. Located in Hagerstown, M.D., 75 miles west of Baltimore, Turning Point provides a range of supportive and therapeutic services for individuals struggling with psychiatric disorders, as well as individuals with co-occurring difficulties involving substance abuse issues.

Along with homeless outreach initiatives and employment services, Turning Point provides a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and supportive housing for clientele. The facility also offers a specialized veterans program and a program designed for individuals aged 16 to 25.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon contacting Turning Point, clinicians schedule a comprehensive assessment to determine each client’s history, interests, and specific needs. . According to its website, PHP provides “individuals structured and meaningful daytime activity,” which combines coping skills training, peer support, and life skills training. If necessary, clients also receive pharmacological intervention and ongoing medication management.

During PHP, clients may also participate in individual and group counseling sessions, as well as exercise and leisure activities. If relevant, programming may also incorporate psychoeducational classes on addiction and relapse prevention. The Healthy Transition Initiative (HTI) also provides age-specific day programming for individuals aged 16 to 25. In addition to treatment programming, HTI helps clients to develop personal goals through ongoing vocational training and opportunities for continued education, as well as support, linkage, and client advocacy to promote self-sufficiency.

Along with vocational training during PHP, Turning Point coordinates with community employers to provide supportive employment opportunities for clientele. If necessary, Turning Point also operates supportive housing facilities for individuals struggling with serious and/or persistent mental illness. To meet the specific needs of veterans, Turning Point of Washington County provides veterans with vocational training and education, as well as employment assistance and support. Turning Point also coordinates with Department of Veteran’s Affairs to provide supportive housing for homeless veterans.

Turning Point of Washington County employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, clinical social workers, case managers, residential facilitators, employment specialists, registered nurses, and a support team of psychiatric technicians.

The sole staff member polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing praised some aspects of the facility, though was moderately critical concerning other areas. Out of five stars, the employee gave a two-star rating for the facility’s counseling options and a one-star rating for the inclusion of holistic offerings; however, they gave four stars for the facility’s discharge planning and for the level of family participation. Citing “staff experience” as a facility strength, they did feel that employees could be more compassionate. The employee also cited facility safety as a concern. “Security for staff would also be a benefit for their safety and the clients,” the employee wrote.

FINANCING

Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Health Foundation accepts private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and Tricare. Turning Point offsets the costs of its program through private donations, public funding, and fundraising efforts.

Inadequate safety procedures for staff I worked for this company temporarily and it was a great facility to work for; however, improvement is always needed. Security for staff would also be a benefit for their safety and the clients.
