Self-Help Addiction Rehabilitation, Inc. (SHAR)

Self-Help Addiction Rehabilitation

SHAR is all about empowering people to take control of their lives. While helping thousands of people over decades, our experience has discovered the age-old irony- that you can only take and regain control of your life after you learn to let go. And herein, lies the problem; letting go or stopping. Whether your dilemma centers around alcohol, heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs or any combination of these or other drugs, at SHAR, we begin the process of change. From the start we teach and show you how your thoughts, attitudes and behaviors lead to and perpetuate your problems, and how working with us can provide you a way out.

ABOUT SELF-HELP ADDICTION REHABILITATION, INC (SHAR)

Self-Help Addiction Rehabilitation, Inc. (SHAR) was founded in Detroit, Mich., in 1969 as a small support group run by a priest and two individuals in recovery. Today it is a comprehensive human service that assists clients throughout the greater Detroit area with a number of personal issues, including those struggling with substance abuse issues. Treatment programs include residential treatment, outpatient treatment, transitional housing, case management, and other community services. Additionally, treatment is available for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions and medical detox is available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The first level of treatment is subacute detox, for clients that need it. Detox usually lasts between three and five days.

Once clients have detoxed, they may progress to SHAR’s residential or outpatient recovery programs. Clients who opt for residential treatment will receive a personalized treatment plan that identifies triggers and provides insight into relapse prevention. Duration of treatment varies, but residents may remain on-site for up to 120 days.

Outpatient care is gender-specific and consists of both community-based group sessions and individual counseling. Beyond outpatient treatment, SHAR offers transitional housing facilities and case management for those who require additional services, such as primary health care or transportation.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Little information is available on SHAR’s website their day-to-day staff. The CEO is a social worker and certified alcohol and drug counselor. A medical director who is board-certified in addictive medicine leads the treatment team.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

SHR provides few details regarding its living conditions or amenities. The five alumni polled to date by Best-rehabs.com provided four- and five-star ratings for the center’s accommodations, meals, and cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The five alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date provided overwhelmingly positive program feedback regarding their experiences at SHAR. Comments submitted cite helpful staff and effective programming as strengths of the facility. The three alumni polled on treatment effectiveness, the staff’s level of training and experience, affordability, cleanliness, family participation, and connectivity/visitor policy all awarded SHAR five out of five stars in each category.

One alum, however, gave a dissenting opinion. He gave SHAR a one-star overall rating and took exception to the cleanliness of the facility, writing: “Place is dirty and 6 rooms closed for bedbugs no cleaning supplies needs to be inspected by the state a.s.a.p”

Reviews found on secondary review sites to date offer less flattering feedback. The single alum to leave feedback with CiteHealth awarded just one out of five stars and wrote: “really BAD staff.”[1] Additionally, on Google to date, there are seven ratings averaging 2.6 out of five stars.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one anonymous loved one who shared their thoughts with Best-rehabs.com to date gave a positive review, but felt that treatment was too short. They commended the “very friendly” staff, but wrote: “Not spent enough time with. All in all it was a great place to be but needed more time with and let go sooner than ready.” Overall though, they rated the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, and when asked if they would recommend SHAR offered another four- out of five-star rating.

FINANCING

According to the center’s website, SHAR is approved by Blue Cross Blue Shield and other insurance carriers.
