Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare-Residential Services, located in Syracuse, N.Y., offers inpatient detoxification services, residential treatment, outpatient programs, and supportive community living services to individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. SBH utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to address the multilayered causes of addiction.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Along with family therapy, SBH provides individual and group counseling sessions to educate individuals on addiction while focusing on behavior modification. Medication-assisted treatment and gambling addiction programs are also available.
Upon admission, staff assesses a client’s psychiatric and physical state before developing an individualized treatment plan to meet clinical goals. For those who need it, SBH offers medically monitored detoxification to facilitate a safe and comfortable substance withdrawal.
Individuals who require a supportive, medically monitored environment may be admitted into SBH’s Willows Inpatient Center, a 40-bed residential facility staffed by medical and counseling professionals. The average length of stay at Willows Inpatient Center is three to six weeks. Along with a daily schedule of therapy sessions and evidence-based treatments, residents are also exposed to alternative therapies such as acupuncture.

According to the facility’s website, 228 employees are on staff accompanied by multiple doctors and executive leaders. Six doctors oversee the medical and psychiatric practices of each facility.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Brochures of the Willows Inpatient Center depict a fairly clinical, but cheerful recovery environment. Residents have access to outdoor sitting areas as well as laundry and exercise facilities. Additionally, all meals are prepared by an on-site chef. The company has several other facilities with specialized care practices including an all-women’s treatment facility.

The reviewers are polarized, with several reviewers giving the facility good marks, and others reporting negative experiences in various categories. The anonymous clients gave the facility an average of 3.5 out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, 3.75 stars for accommodations & amenities, and 3.25 stars for meals & nutrition**.
Four alumni gave the facility 3.5 stars for its family participation policy, 1.75 stars for its cell phone and visitation policy, 3.5 stars for affordability, and 4.5 stars for its holistic offerings. The alumni also gave the facility 4.75 stars for cleanliness and 4.5 stars for its exercise and leisure options.
Alumni felt that strengths of the facility were the caring staff and experienced counselors, high level of organization, and ability to keep clients busy with little down time. Reviewers said the facility could improve upon the food, the quality of medical treatment, and the amount of available female housing. One alum also added that the facility “offered great support and aftercare planning.”

Loved ones expressed several strengths of the facility, including a focus on individual needs, several caring staff members, and overall treatment effectiveness. They felt that the facility could improve upon keeping rules consistent from one client to the next and adding services for those who work full time. One family member said the facility “provided a lot of help” to her loved one. Another reviewer disagreed, calling the facility a “last resort treatment option.”

WHAT STAFF SAY
At the time of this writing, there was one staff member, M.W., who was polled by Best-rehabs.com. This reviewer gave the facility poor marks across several different metrics. M.W. reported that there were 10 licensed medical professionals who were on staff at the facility and 2 medical professional who were contractors. M.W. worked full-time at this private, non-profit facility.
On a scale of one to five stars, M.W. gave the facility the two stars when asked about the management’s willingness to put patients’ interests first. He gave three out of five stars when asked to rate the overall quality of executive leadership, and four stars when asked whether the facility offers fair pricing and financial support for patients.
When asked about the strengths of the facility, M.W. wrote, “strong credentialed staff (CASACS), strong unlicensed mental health and social work staff.” When asked about the weaknesses he wrote “leadership, communication, and patient centered care” He also mentioned that he would recommend the facility to a friend or family member who was considering rehab, “depending on their mental health status and SUD needs.”
