New Directions Inc

In operation since 1981, New Directions, Inc. provides a full continuum of treatment programming for adolescents struggling with a primary substance abuse disorder, as well as co-occurring mental health concerns. The facility also accepts pregnant adolescents. Located in Pepper Pike, Ohio, the facility provides gender-specific residential programs, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and traditional outpatient programs. New Directions does not provide medical detoxification services on-site.

Before beginning treatment, clients participate in an initial assessment to help clinicians develop an individualized treatment plan. New Directions, Inc.’s programming blends a range of evidence-based treatment methods with experiential therapies, educational classes, and family involvement. While clinical treatment helps to identify factors that may lead to addictive behavior, experiential therapies are designed to promote healthy lifestyle changes.

Utilizing a range of evidence-based treatment modalities, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI), New Directions facilitates frequent individual and group counseling sessions. Counseling sessions are designed to identify links between destructive thinking and behavior patterns, promote open communication, and foster peer support. As gender-specific programs, these counseling sessions may also address issues common among male and female adolescents in recovery.

Along with counseling, residents attend educational classes on the consequences of substance abuse, coping skills, and developing support networks. A survey also indicated that 12-step involvement may play a role in treatment. In addition, residents with a dual diagnosis have access to psychiatric care, which may include mental health assessments, specialized counseling, and medication management.

As a treatment program designed for adolescents, New Directions considers family involvement as a crucial component of overall programming. Family members are required to participate in the residential program twice weekly, which includes multifamily groups, family counseling, and parent education. In addition to traditional treatment methods, residents participate in music and art therapy, as well as fitness and exercise sessions. Clients enjoy off-site recreational outings twice per week, such as hiking excursions and bowling nights.

Once a resident completes residential treatment, clinicians may encourage them to enroll into one of the facility’s outpatient programs, which offers adolescents a supportive continuity of care. These outpatient programs include counseling sessions and educational classes. To provide additional support, New Directions also utilizes the recovery app, Ascent, which gives clients access to peer recovery coaching.
