ABOUT RETREAT AT LANCASTER COUNTY

Set in the hills of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Retreat at Lancaster County provides a continuum of treatment services for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Depending on their needs, clients may access medically-monitored detox, inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), and standard outpatient treatment (OP). Additionally, the facility offers a variety treatment tracks for special populations, including Veterans, college students, individuals who have experienced trauma, and members of the LGBTQ community.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment designed to help staff determine the most appropriate level of treatment. Those who need medical attention for withdrawal begin their stay in the facility’s inpatient detox unit, which offers medication management, monitoring, and psychological care.

Once stabilized, clients may move on to the center’s inpatient program, which is guided by 12-step principles and designed to help residents develop relapse prevention skills. While in treatment, clients participate in individual therapy, group counseling, and a variety of holistic modalities, including art therapy, music therapy, and equine-assisted psychotherapy. Medication management is provided as needed.

Retreat at Lancaster County’s PHP program is similar in design, but offers clients the flexibility to reside at home while undergoing treatment. The center’s IOP and OP programs, which last six to 12 months, offer clients step-down treatment options. Additionally, program graduates and their families have access to continuing care through the center’s eHome Aftercare, an online counseling program.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

When asked how likely they were to recommend Retreat at Lancaster County to others, the nine alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided an average rating of 3.78 out of five stars. This assessment is reflected in alumni review commentary, which is mixed but includes more positive remarks than negative ones. “This is a decent rehab. It’s the largest one that I’ve been to (175+ patients), which makes it easy for people to get lost in the cracks,” Dave wrote in a representative review.

Alumni were most impressed with the facility’s cleanliness, its exercise and leisure options, and the staff’s level of training and experience, which received respective ratings of 4.56, four, and 4.22 stars. Though some alumni felt that facility was understaffed and overcrowded, respondents generally characterized the treatment team as “caring,” “great,” and “judgement free.”

The center’s counseling options and its holistic offerings received slightly lower ratings of 3.89 and 3.78 stars, and a couple alumni indicated the center’s amenities were not as advertised. “The equine program is a joke…no one even so much as sees a horse,” G.R. wrote. The program’s family participation and its connectivity/visitor policies shared the lowest rating of 3.44 stars. Some alumni indicated that calling loved ones was discouraged or difficult.

Although the program’s affordability received an above-average rating of 3.78 stars, multiple alumni were also critical of the center’s billing practices. “The atmosphere was aggressive, chaotic and money (not patient) focused,” G.R. told Best-rehabs.com.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The six loved ones surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this review provided mostly above-average ratings in all evaluated categories. When asked how likely they were to recommend the facility, they provided an average rating of 4.33 stars. They gave the center’s cleanliness, its exercise and leisure options, and the staff’s level of training and experience ratings of 4.6, four, and 4.17 stars, respectively. “After years of struggling, this was the place that finally helped my loved one overcome their addiction. Well trained and qualified staff are amazing!” an anonymous respondent wrote in a representative review. Surveyed loved ones gave the center’s counseling options, its holistic offerings, and its affordability the lowest overall ratings of 3.5, 3.33, and 3.5 stars. Additionally, some loved ones felt that the facility was primarily focused on collecting fees. “They do not care about treatment, only money,” M.G. told Best-rehabs.com.

Despite giving the program’s family participation an average rating of 4.4 stars and its connectivity/visitor policies 4.17 stars, multiple family members expressed frustration with how difficult it was to stay in touch with their loved ones. “We were all assured that the patient would have unlimited access to the phone and could be in touch as much as he liked. Imagine how we felt when we did not hear from him for 6 days. Apparently the counselors discourage contact with family and friends,” Q.K. wrote in a representative review.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Each of the three employees surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing noted that they would recommend Retreat at Lancaster County to others. Pamela described the staff as “very skilled” and highlighted the center’s holistic offerings. “Programming consists of a lot of different therapies that include massage, horse back riding, art therapy along with the small group every day,” she wrote.

  • I have been clean and sober since discharging from Retreat over 2 years ago. Retreat taught me that I can have fun and be sober. And that I'm still a worthy person, even though I'm an addict.

  • The treatment was top notch. I had plenty of 1:1 time with my primary therapist, and felt connected to the support staff as well. All of my needs were met, and then some. I will be celebrating 5 years drug free of May 2nd, 2018. I couldnt have done it without Retreat. I recommended Retreat to everyone I know who is struggling with addiction. I will be forever grateful.

  • From the second i walked in the door i felt welcomed and safe. After meeting my therapist we figured out and individualized treatment plan that would work best for my specific needs. My entire stay from detox, rehab and to aftercare planning I felt as if I had the quality of care that i needed. My family was also very involved through my entire stay which made me feel more comfortable with the decisions that were being placed around my care.

  • The first time I was here was in 2014 and there was a lot of groups to attend that were Informative, however in 2016 there was less talk about recovery and it was basically just a getaway to go to. I feel like no one really took anything serious. I really think they need to bring back all the groups they use to have in 2014. They need more CAs on a shift at a time and they need to be more educated and caring about patients. Theres some workers that love their job and you can tell they want to help people but on the other hand theres workers that Cant stand to be there. Patients that have been there a lot and are known they get special treatment and they act like they come first and they get more attention. However if you are a newbie there they dont know you so they wont talk to u as much or help you when u need help. The meals were made out to be so amazing and in 2014 they were very good we even had steak and lobster, however in 2016 the meals were terrible. I would think it would have been better over time because of everyone that goes there and they get feedback but I guess they dont take everyones feedback into consideration.

  • Multiple activities every day, lots of different support, highly educated therapists and doctors. Easy access to a wide variety of different daily activities which help move things along. Lots of options, easy access to doctors, good detox program, 90% awesome staff (many who are also in recovery with years of sobriety). Highly personalized treatment plans. Overall comfortable accommodations. This is a large facility which often has over 150 people inpatient at a time so it can be a little intimidating. Most of their systems are pretty efficient but you will occasionally find yourself waiting around during breaks, meals, and med times. Approx. 2/3 of the clients are under 30 years old which can make the experience seem like high school.

  • Retreat was very considerate of my personal needs. I came in two weeks after a c section and needed to detox from methadone. They were very thoughtful with letting me sleep and giving me rides to other buildings for counseling. At the time they didnt offer treatment during pregnancy but understand they do now.Offers many choices to fill day with healthy activities. Food is great, expect to gain at least 20 lbs.

  • I had an excellent therapist during my stay at the retreat who believed in me and my recovery. She was a great support system and one of the reasons I have succeeded. However the staff was questionable. There was a lot of drama and unethical behaviors that went on during my stay and a lot of them were with the staff. I stayed here in early 2012 so it could be different now. I thank god that I have maintained my sobriety and have not been since. I would recommend my therapist but not 100% sure about the facility because of my experience with the staff. I am sure the staff has changed since this sort of field is a revolving door and people move on. Has a lot to offer. Weakness:The staff

  • This is a decent rehab. It’s the largest one that I’ve been to (175+ patients), which makes it easy for people to get lost in the cracks. There are a LOT of younger patients there who do not take rehab or recovery seriously, at all, and it can be frustrating for anyone that is a bit more motivated. In a lot of ways, this place feels sort of like a summer camp. Outside of your small group and certain track groups, most of the other groups tend to be electives like art, music therapy, sports, etc. They do offer a nightly AA meeting in the gym though. The counselors tend to be very hit-and-miss. There are definitely some really good ones (one of my old ones was promoted to Caron) as well as a lot that are kind of mediocre. They try to put you in a small group with people from a similar background as you (i.e. alcohol, heroin, first time in treatment, etc.). The facilities themselves are decent, although there are some negatives - triple bedrooms all over (the beds themselves are decent), the buildings, in general, tend to be very hot or cold, and as another reviewer pointed out, they sometimes smell like smoke and/or vomit. As far as amenities, you are allowed to bring an iPod player as long as it doesn’t have a screen (?), or you can get one from your counselor and load it with music during free time each weekday. There is a small gym in the basketball/volleyball court, and they do offer things like equine therapy, outside AA meetings, movie nights, a gardening group, etc. The food is pretty good for a rehab (although heavy on carbs), and they leave fruit, cereal, and snacks out at all times. Overall, I think that this is one of the better rehabs in the area, especially when compared to the cost of a place like Caron. My insurance covered most of the cost here. However, like most rehabs, it’s still a revolving door for addicts.
The retreat was a wonderful facility. My son received great care and counseling. He left there with all the tools to succeed in his recovery process. He had followed all the steps so far and is doing great. 90 days clean. I feel the retreat gave my son his life back and provided him with all the tools he will need to stay clean. There is minimal interaction with the family members but I felt that is exactly what they need to do it for themselves. I would highly recommend the retreat! The facilty was clean and my son said food was pretty good. They took care of his physical and emotional needs the entire time.
I am reading these comments and really believe that none of these are real.. Retreat gave me and 1000's of people their lives back, the place is amazing, I have been to many rehabs and this is the only one I ever got anything out of..The staff was so caring and experienced, I have been to much more expensive facilities, but this one finally made a difference, I am 3 years clean now and have my life back,, I can't say thank you enough Retreat.....

  • I will preface this review by saying I believe my fiance received good care at the Retreat and is making progress with his recovery. However I have many issues with Retreat, their staff, the way they treat loved ones, and the lies they tell during the marketing phase to fake families into being comfortable choosing them. The marketing staff have quotas and apparently they are encouraged tol say anything they think you want to hear in answer to your legitimate questions in order to get you to commit. I believe our experience with Retreat has ultimately made it more difficult for him to transition back into his life, with his parents, his children, and with me. First of all, when patients go in, they are immediately isolated from friends and family. We were all assured that the patient would have unlimited access to the phone and could be in touch as much as he liked. Imagine how we felt when we did not hear from him for 6 days. Apparently the counselors discourage contact with family and friends, and allow only two 10 minute monitored calls a week. Not hearing from him and not knowing why engendered tremendous distrust between the family, the patient, and his counselor that adversely affected the “family support relationship” the marketing people claim is so important to the process. Secondly, the marketing stresses that while they are a large facility, size is not a problem and the patients will receive plenty of adequate individualized care. They brag about the 2-1 ratio of staff to patient, a number I now assume include the kitchen staff, the gardening staff, and the sales staff. Every single time we tried to reach the counselor or anyone at Retreat, we were told they were SO busy and had SO many other patients to attend to and that we should not expect special treatment. Multiple calls and emails went unanswered. Apparently the staff is JUST TOO BUSY to deal with the questions and concerns of loved ones. After I filled out the initial survey, his counselor asked me to expand on some things that came up in our session, saying that they would be useful for his treatment. I worked very hard on this and sent several emails about what I had observed in the months prior to his arrival, but once I sent them the counselor never even opened them (I have an app that tells me) even though my fiance was there two weeks more. Third, as I’m sure you’ve picked up on, the Retreat is very proud of their new extended care facility in South Florida. Apparently the whole 30 days at Retreat is spent marketing (rent seeking) the aftercare facility with a hard sell and convincing the patient not to go back to their families and spend even more money to live in Florida for an indefinite period of time. While we were too smart to exercise this option, we’ve learned that almost half of his fellow patients were directly enrolled in the extended program and sent straight to Florida. This is unethical, imo, and not in the best interest of the patient. Fourth, and this is huge. They LIE about men and women being separated. I’m sure they know if we knew the truth we would never choose a coed environment, which is definitely not the norm in the rehab community. The sleeping accommodations might be separate, but they were with girls all day and night, in groups, meetings, electives, and socializing. As I said, my fiance is doing well, but we have had a hard time reconciling our family and all the hard feelings and distrust that were engendered by the Retreat and the attitude of their staff, on his part as well as ours. I now see these other reviews where they complained that loved ones are completely cut out of the process. I’m sure he got good care, and I have high hopes for his recovery, but there are better options available.

  • My wife and I chose The Retreat together for her rehab, we looked at the website and read all the info. I drove her there and waited while she was admitted,I expecting a staff member to go over the program with me. No such luck, the staff encouraged me to just leave. I stayed till she came out of the office and a quick peck on the cheek and they swept her away, That was Thursday and it was Monday before I got a call from her therapist. She said she would email me some info that she send everyone. This is when I found out the "Rules". Contact with family is discouraged, phone calls maybe twice a week and then on a speaker with a therapist listening. I could have a chance to see her in her third week but only in a family counseling session with the therapist, not a visit, and only after I attended their 4 hour long family education class. In my opinion this is to discourage you from attending the counseling session at all, as I think they really don't want family involvement. There were some rather questionable things that her therapist wanted me to do as well. I went back and forth with her therapist via email (she would only send one email a day no matter how quick I replied) I stated that these "Rules" should have been posted on the website and not given to me 5 days after she was admitted. It took me threatening to pull her out and canceling the insurance payment to get them to have her call me, she said she was fine and all but the call was on speaker with her therapist listening in so what else was she going to say! In my opinion their methods are very deceptive, They did not even attempt to establish any trust between myself and the staff. If you plan to be involved with your loved ones recovery then this is not the place for you. By the time she gets out, I will need therapy!

  • Would not recommend of you want to be engaged with your family member who is seeking rehab and recovery. Poor poor communication with family. No aftercare arrangements and only given less than 48 hours notice prior to discharge. I sent a number of local contacts for local recovery houses that needed referral from a rehab facility for admittance. Outreach specialist assigned to daughter NEVER made calls nor would answer questions. I was never made aware that Insurance had denied inpatient coverage. There seemed to be a wide variance of quality of staff. Therapist was very sarcastic and curt in emails. Not patient first---Retreat first. Would not recommend.

  • The Retreat is a financial gold mine, with care and concern for money, way before patient care. I saw a Veteran discharged while detoxing as the VA only paid x number of days. No attempt was made to work out a payment plan for continuing care, or effort to assist in locating a continuing care facility. Simple told to pack up. This is tragic, and by no means isolated

The insurance said the rehab didn't do what they should have and the retreat said the insurance denied a longer stay. I feel the rehab should have done more to get my son to be in patient for a least 30 days. He got 12 days and his discharge diagnosis was acute alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine abuse

Weaknesses: Lack of complying with amenities that are advertised, hard to make phone calls to loved ones, hard to get a response from the physician/nurse. The facility is welcoming for the most part and employs those who are familiar with the disease of addiction.

  • They were the best I have seen. Helped my son much better then marworth. As far as concentration on therapy, which is much needed, they were awesome. They concentrated on therapy 7 days a week whereas other places only concentrated on it 5 days a week. As far as I am concerned that made the difference in putting them on top. The retreat in Lancaster Pennsylvania is the all time best.

I came to this facility because I had had a relapse from alcohol and a drug called suboxone. I had been sober for almost a year before my relapse. This facility was huge, I believe 70 patients. Most of them under 35. I am 51. Please be carefully where you send your son or daughter. Or yourself. I am sober now 9 months, but only after a nice quiet stay in another facility.

  • Just returned home from Retreat. My stay was positive and negative. The community is great and the patients really do make the best of it while there. Staff on the other hand could care less, not saying this about all staff, there are exceptions to every rule but most only care about money. They shove recovery houses down your family's throat because they receive a kick-back for sending patients there. I was not pleased with the lack of communication between staff. It seemed to take hours just for a simple request, and you were always sent on a wild goose chase as to which staff member would help you. Physically the place is beautiful but they don't give you any options besides the 12-Steps. The place needs much improvement to say the least.

  • The atmosphere was aggressive, chaotic and money (not patient) focused. They try to first get you to private pay even if you have insurance. I had to really push to get them to initiate contact with my insurance company. The equine program is a joke...no one even so much as sees a horse. More than likely it's just some fraudulent write-off scheme. Lots of down time and smoke breaks. Half of my clothing "disappeared" along with my jewelry and medications, never to be found or returned. Administration was repeatedly notified but did nothing about the "disappearances." Phone calls are not returned and the billing department is just rude. Some of the therapists were very good and genuine; many were not. There is no smart recovery program option or augmentation, so if you like having the AA cult force fed to you on a daily basis then you will love it at Retreat. The food is ok but heavy on the fat and carbohydrates. All in all, I would not recommend this facility. Save your money and go elsewhere. I did and leaving was the best part of my whole Retreat experience. There are some very good facilities out there - this is not one of them - keep searching.

  • Overall I have very mixed feelings about my stay. Some of the treatment was fantastic. Great counseling. I got pushed into trying to change my meds when that was not what I was there for. Some of the staff was very aggressive physically. Also, they were aggressive in getting money out of my spouse for treatment without my consent. I repeatedly asked what my billing and insurance situation was and was blown off. I did not find out until I got home how much we paid out of pocket. That was just plain deceptive and unnecessary. I would have given them the money if they had included me. I felt like they were all about the money in the end, which is why I am hesitant to recommend the facility.

  • This facility needs ALOT of improvement regarding it's clinical staff. They were often unprofessional, aggressive and controlling. We paid privately and I did not leave with any aftercare plan. They only seemed to care about getting paid, not quality of care. Would NOT recommend to anyone looking for solid recovery.
