River City Rehabilitation Center, Inc.

Located in San Antonio, River City Rehabilitation Center offers medication-assisted therapy (MAT) on an outpatient-basis for adults struggling with chemical dependency. Most clients receive treatment for addiction to opioids or alcohol, and referrals are provided to community health and social services for those needing additional support. According to the facility’s official Facebook page, the rehab center has been in operation since 1989.

Medications used to treat substance use disorders at River City Rehab include methadone, Antabuse, and Trexan. It is one of 94 facilities in Texas that offers methadone maintenance. While the facility’s emphasis is on the chemical factor of addiction, its website also notes the importance of multidisciplinary treatment for emotional, social, and physical wellbeing.

The admissions process is first-come, first-served in San Antonio, beginning at 5:30 in the morning, two days a week. Treatment is offered six mornings a week. The admissions process includes undergoing blood tests and meeting with a physician and counselor.

Several counseling services are available to supplement medication maintenance, including individual and family sessions; relapse prevention support; counseling for clients living with HIV, Hepatitis C, and STDs; substance abuse education; and nicotine therapy.

The facility’s website highlights the multidisciplinary nature of its treatment team. Most staff hold master’s or higher level degrees, including a psychiatrist, nurses, a pharmacist, and licensed therapists.

There are two River City Rehabilitation Center sites, one in San Antonio and one in New Braunfels. Both are located just off Interstate 35. Photos on the center’s website show simple, clinical waiting and treatment spaces.

The sole alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave River City a highly positive review, awarding ratings of either four or five stars out of five across 15 metrics. These included evaluations of the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, the staff’s level of training and experience, admissions and discharge procedures, options for counseling, and affordability. “Staff treats patients with respect and are available anytime to answer questions,” the former client wrote.

Feedback on secondary review sites was also largely favorable. Of 18 ratings on Google reviews, 10 individuals gave five out of five-star reviews for an average rating of 4.1 stars. Two criticized the facility’s pricing and staff, while another two wrote positively about costs. While most spoke positively about the staff, one one-star reviewer characterized the staff as rude.[1]

One positive reviewer on Yelp complimented the staff on their efficiency. However, the other Yelp review was very negative and included complaints about the building itself, staff rudeness, and requirements for meeting frequently with the center’s psychiatrist.[2]

The two loved ones who had responded to Best-rehabs.com surveys at the time of this writing also gave the facility positive feedback. Both awarded River City similarly high ratings of four or five stars for facets including affordability, cleanliness and maintenance of the facility, admissions and discharge, and staff experience. Both rated their likelihood to recommend the program five stars.

Only credit cards, cash, and money orders are mentioned on the facility’s website as means of payment. The program also maintains that it is “willing to work with clients on their payment schedule.”
