ABOUT CENTRAL ARKANSAS VETERANS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM – JOHN L. MCCLELLAN MEMORIAL VETERANS HOSPITAL
Located near downtown Little Rock, Ark., John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital provides residential treatment, short-term inpatient care, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), and intensive outpatient program (IOP) for military veterans struggling with chemical dependency and psychiatric conditions, including co-occurring disorders. Part of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, the center also provides medically-monitored detoxification and is among 19 facilities in the state that specialize in treating veterans.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Patients undergo a substance abuse and psychiatric assessment to determine a plan of care. Those needing a structured, monitored environment are referred to short-term inpatient or live-in residential care to stabilize and then transition to a less intensive level of treatment.
The facility may use medication-assisted therapy (MAT), such as Suboxone or Campral, to minimize cravings associated with opioid addiction or alcohol dependency. Treatment involves evidence-based treatment methods and 12-Step practices. Patients participate in individual and group counseling sessions to address destructive patterns that contribute to addictive behaviors and, through educational classes, learn coping and relapse prevention skills. Marriage/couples counseling is available to educate loved ones about mental health and addiction.
The center offers medication management to individuals with a primary psychiatric disorder or dual diagnosis, as well as specialized counseling for those with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief and loss, and other trauma-related conditions. Patients receive comprehensive discharge plans and may transition to the facility’s less intensive PHP or IOP for typically six to 10 weeks after residential care.
