ABOUT CRONIN HOUSE
One of Horizon Services’ six treatment centers, Cronin House provides residential treatment for adults who are struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. The facility is located in Hayward, Calif., and serves the communities of Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties. Detox services are not provided on-site, but treatment can be arranged through one of the organization’s other facilities.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
New clients typically undergo initial assessments to help inform their individualized treatment plans. Care includes both individual and group counseling, as well as groups for family members of clients. Residents receive addiction education and life skills training, and participate in recreational and athletic activities. Most individuals stay at Cronin House for 60 days, but treatment may be extended up to 90 days. Prior to program completion, clients are provided with a discharge plan and referrals for continuing care.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the facility’s website, the staff consists of counselors and other “dedicated professionals,” many of whom are in recovery.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Located in a suburban neighborhood, Cronin House’s homelike residential facility can accommodate up to 34 individuals at a time. Clients share bedrooms with one or more residents and are provided with three meals and two snacks a day. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings are hosted on-site, and a Client Council offers leadership opportunities for those in treatment. Visitors are allowed after an initial three-week waiting period, and smoking is permitted in designated areas.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Andy, the sole alum polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing, was pleased with his treatment experience. When asked how likely he was to recommend the facility to others, he submitted a rating of five out of five stars. He provided five-star ratings for multiple evaluated categories, including the program’s treatment effectiveness, the center’s treatment of co-occurring disorders, the staff’s level of training and experience, and the facility’s cleanliness. “One on one with awesome staff. Lived experience staff,” he told Best-rehabs.com. Despite his positive review, Andy provided below-average ratings for the center’s holistic offerings, counseling options, and faith-based treatment.
Reviews left on third-party sites are limited and mixed. One Google reviewer submitted three out of five stars, and the only other Google reviewer did not seek treatment after an initial interaction with administrative staff.[1] Norman, the one individual to submit a review to Yelp, gave the facility five out of five stars.[2] “They helped me beat a lifelong meth habit. Good people wanting to help! I stayed the 90 days. 2 years latter I am working in the mental health,” he wrote.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The one anonymous loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided a mixed review. When asked how likely they were to recommend the facility to others, they provided a rating of four out of five stars. “Counseling was nice,” they told Best-rehabs.com. However, this same reviewer gave the program’s treatment effectiveness only two stars, perhaps due to what they perceived as a lax security protocol. “Unfortunately, they allow people off the property and people not serious about their getting clean still get access to drugs and alcohol,” they wrote.
FINANCING
According to the facility’s website, all fees are determined by a sliding scale. Clients with MediCal may use their policy to cover the cost of classes and therapy, but residents are responsible for room and board.
