ABOUT VARP, INC.
Located in San Bernardino, in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, VARP, Inc. provides long-term (30 to 90 days) residential treatment for adult men and women struggling with chemical dependency. In operation since 1979, VARP, Inc. is comprised of three separate, gender-specific residential programs and transitional houses for alumni. Detox services are not offered here.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Clients may undergo an initial substance abuse assessment and evaluation upon admission to help inform an individualized treatment plan. With programming designed to provide residents with the coping skills and recovery tools necessary for sustained sobriety, residents follow the 12-step recovery model; throughout their stay, they’ll attend support meetings and study fellowship literature.
Along with an immersion in 12-Step, clients keep to a structured schedule of process groups, recreational activities, relapse prevention classes, and educational book studies. Individual counseling is also incorporated into treatment.
VARP, Inc. also provides ongoing discharge planning to ensure a client’s successful transition back into the community. This may include referrals to community-based support services. In its effort to facilitate family reunification, the center also serves as a client advocate for court and family service agencies.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to its webpage, the state-licensed center employs a team of certified counselors and addiction paraprofessionals experienced in the recovery process.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
VARP, Inc. operates a pair of home-like residential facilities in San Bernardino, the Gibson House for Men and the Gibson House Recovery Center for Women. Both residences can accommodate up to 40 residents, and the home for men features an on-site pool. Long-term transitional housing is available in San Bernardino for qualified alumni.
VARP, Inc. also operates Metcalf Recovery Ranch, a 20-bed facility for men in Blythe, 170 miles east of San Bernardino. According to the program’s webpage, all three facilities offer easy access to community services, local hospitals, bus routes, shopping, and recreational events.
The two alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date shared contrasting perspectives on the quality of accommodations and food; one left one-star ratings for both these categories, the other five stars.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Much like their evaluation for the facility’s accommodations, the two alumni shared disparate opinions for most aspects of treatment. While one reported lasting sobriety, they also submitted one-star ratings for staff support and the effectiveness of counseling sessions. “I feel any rehab will only help those who are ready to be helped. I am currently still clean,” the alum commented.
Lloyd, the other alum, disagreed and submitted five-star ratings for over a dozen treatment aspects evaluated, including the staff’s level of training and experience, the quality of the counseling sessions, and the overall staff support. “Gibson house saved my life,” he told Best-rehabs.com. “I would go back if I ever relapsed. It is the best rehab ever.”
Reviews across secondary sources were reflective of this positive assessment. On Yellowpages.com, two reviewers left perfect five-star ratings of the men’s facility. One reviewer called it “A place where they care,” while Mark wrote: “They helped me save my life!”
In collective agreement, 36 reviewers on the facility’s unofficial Facebook page awarded the Gibson House for Men an excellent average rating of 4.7 out of five stars.
FINANCING
There is currently no information provided on the facility’s webpage regarding its costs, though it does offer sliding-scale fees, as determined by a client’s ability to pay.
