ABOUT LOKAHI TREATMENT CENTERS – KAILUA KONA

Lokahi Treatment Centers (LTC) is a nonprofit organization that operates six treatment facilities across Hawaii. This review focuses on the Kailua Kona center, which is located on the Big Island of Hawaii, and provides outpatient programs for adults and adolescents struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health issues. Founded in 2001, LTC also offers anger management and domestic violence intervention (DVI) programs.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the center’s website, to identify any co-occurring issues, clients participate in an initial substance abuse history and psychiatric assessment before beginning treatment. If applicable, LTC may also perform an anger management and/or DVI assessment. LTC coordinates with the criminal justice system to develop programs that satisfy court, probation, or parole requirements. According to the program’s website, one goal of treatment is to guide clients “through a world of new choices.”

Substance abuse outpatient programs are comprised of group counseling sessions that help clients identify destructive thinking patterns commonly associated with addiction. The integrated treatment approach addresses both the psychological and behavioral aspects of addiction. Along with group therapy, programs incorporate one-on-one counseling sessions and family therapy into treatment, and individuals with co-occurring issues also receive ongoing medication management.

Adolescent group sessions are co-ed, while adult sessions are gender-specific to address issues commonly associated with adult men and women struggling with addiction. Group sessions are held in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings to accommodate client’s schedules. Upon discharge, clients are referred to community-based resources to support their ongoing recovery.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing had mixed experiences at the Kailua Kona facility.

Alum Jim gave the center one out of five stars for a number of categories including the likelihood he would recommend the center, for holistic offerings, and treatment effectiveness. “There is a reason that rehab success rates are in the tank, and it’s not the addict,” he wrote. “It’s the only medical specialty that doesn’t even look at the organ it’s treating.”

The other alum gave the center four out of five stars when asked if they would recommend LTC, and gave the center five stars for affordability but only one star for counseling options. “They were knowledgeable in the recovery program,” the alum wrote. “Sometimes the counselor was too moody, seems like he brought in some of his own problems. It was a learning experience.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, LTC accepts most types of medical insurance.
