ABOUT MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL – CENTER FOR ADDICTION MEDICINE

Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass Gen) is a full-service primary, secondary, and tertiary care hospital network that is home to a Center for Addiction Medicine (CAM). Located in Boston, CAM provides outpatient-based treatment for individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including Suboxone and Vivitrol, are also available on-site for adult clients.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is split into two age groups: a young adults program, The Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS), for those aged 15 to 26, and the West End Clinic (WEC), for adults. The facility is among the 35.8 percent of Massachusetts facilities to offer specialized treatment for young adults.

WEC offers daytime and evening intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) for adults, while ARMS provides an IOP for its young clients. General outpatient treatment is also available for both groups, and all programs include random drug and alcohol screenings.

The facility draws from a wide range of evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), psychodynamic group therapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based therapies.

In addition to these and other individual therapies, CAM provides family therapy, group therapy, and psychiatry consultation. The West End Clinic also offers specialized treatment tracks, including a 10-week smoking cessation class and groups focusing on relapse prevention, mindfulness, Seeking Safety, and anxiety management. There is also a family alcoholism education series for loved ones.
