ABOUT OZARK CENTER: NEW DIRECTIONS SUBSTANCE ABUSE UNIT

In operation since 1965, Ozark Center is a nonprofit organization that provides behavioral health treatment services for adults, children, and families through its 30 locations. Located in the community of Joplin in southwestern Mo., Ozark Center’s New Directions program provides residential treatment for individuals struggling with a primary substance abuse disorder, as well as specialized, outpatient-based programming for individuals involved in the criminal justice system. If necessary, the facility also helps clients manage withdrawal symptoms through on-site medical detoxification services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon intake, clients participate in an initial substance abuse assessment to determine individual needs and strengths. If detoxification is necessary, New Directions provides 24-hour medical supervision throughout the process. Individuals admitted into New Directions’ detoxification program may be encouraged to transition into the facility’s residential program to continue treatment once stable.

New Directions’ treatment program utilizes a range of evidence-based treatments to address issues contributing to addictive behavior and help clients develop skills to prevent relapse. During residential treatment, clients may participate in a structured schedule of individual and group counseling sessions, educational classes, and therapeutic recreational activities. According to the facility’s website, family involvement is a large component of residential treatment. Family treatment services include family therapy, education, support groups, co-dependency counseling, and group counseling.

New Directions considers developing support networks as an important aspect of recovery, which suggests the facility may incorporate peer-support fellowships into programming, such as 12-Step. During residential treatment, clients may attend on-site 12-step meetings, study fellowship literature, and perform associated “step-work.”

In addition to its residential program, New Directions provides three specialized, outpatient-based programs for individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Designed for individuals referred to Ozark Center by the Division of Probation and Parole, the facility’s Short-term Opportunities for Probation and Parole (STOPP) program lasts 10 weeks and consists of individual therapy, group counseling, and group education. The facility also provides an anger management program track.

New Directions also provides a Substance Abuse Traffic Offender Program (SATOP), which offers education and assessments for individuals charged for alcohol-related driving offenses. SATOP’s programming may satisfy court requirements for driver license reinstatement. In addition, New Directions facilitates a court-supervised, comprehensive Drug Court for individuals with a drug-related charge. Drug Court consists of educational classes, counseling, and drug testing. Individuals involved in Drug Court also have access to vocational training and job placement services.
