ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – COUNSELING CENTER

The Counseling Center of the University of Missouri provides outpatient-based treatment services for enrolled undergraduate and graduate students struggling with mental health concerns, behavioral issues, or co-occurring difficulties. Located in Columbia, Mo., the Counseling Center is located on the university’s campus.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before beginning treatment services, students undergo an initial mental and behavioral health assessment to identify specific individual needs and assist clinicians in developing an effective treatment plan. While most assessments are conducted by appointment, the facility does facilitate walk-in assessments and provides a 24-hour crisis intervention hot line. According to the facility’s website, the Counseling Center’s services are designed “to assists students in learning to cope with emotional, social and academic concerns interfering with their success while at MU.”

The Counseling Center provides a range of outpatient-based treatment services to assist its students. To address the underlying issues that may contribute to irrational thinking and/or destructive behavior, the center offers both group and individual counseling sessions. According to the facility’s website, individual counseling is typically offered on a weekly schedule, while the center offers a range of scheduled, specialized group counseling sessions daily that cover various topics. Couples therapy is also available (partners do not need to be a student).

Designed to provide students with peer support, build self-esteem, and increase self-awareness, the Counseling Center facilitates daily group counseling sessions. These counseling sessions may address topics related to substance abuse, recovering from grief and loss, increasing mindfulness, and improving coping skills. The center also regularly schedules workshops and presentations regarding various topics that may improve the student’s well-being and college experience.

The Counseling Center also offers specific program tracks that students may enroll in, including a five-week Mind Over Mood program track, which is designed to help students overcome common symptoms related to depression and anxiety. The center also facilitates an eight-week Overcoming Obstacles through Creative Expression program, which utilizes art therapy to improve self-confidence, work on personal development, improve communication skills, and reduce stress.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Counseling Center of the University of Missouri employees a team of licensed psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychology residents, licensed professional counselors, and interns. All of the clinicians employed at the Counseling Center also work with the university’s Department of Psychology.
