Hoy Recovery Program Inc. Espanola New Mexico

The Hoy Recovery Program was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1974. The primary mission of the Hoy Recovery Program is the enhancement and strengthening of individuals, families and the community by providing culturally relevant substance abuse services in a safe and friendly environment.

Located in Espanola, N.M., Hoy Recovery Program offers residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient care to individuals struggling with addiction. The facility’s treatment approach balances evidence-based practices with traditional Mayan healing therapies. Detox is not available on-site.

The Hoy Recovery Program uses multiple modalities including traditional Mayan therapies to treat substance abuse issues. Group therapy is the centerpiece of the residential program, but clients also participate in individual therapy as needed. Residential treatment is gender-specific and adopts different philosophies depending on the group. The men’s program encourages peer support in a non-competitive environment, whereas the women’s program celebrates interdependence, develops resilience, and validates life experiences.

Aside from traditional therapies, the program introduces other therapies under a holistic approach to treatment. Clients can participate in agriculture therapy, fitness programs, and Acudetox (a type of acupuncture) to promote physical recovery. Clients also have the option of participating in art and poetry therapy, as well as skills training to promote sober hobby development. 12-step meetings are incorporated into the program and are encouraged during and after treatment.

Hoy Recovery also offers a 16-week intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults who have completed residential treatment or who don’t require 24-hour supervision. During the nine hours of outpatient services per week, clients participate in addiction education, relapse prevention planning, and life skills training. Clients also participate in individual, group, and family therapy. Clients attend 12-step meetings in their communities throughout outpatient treatment.

Hoy Recovery has licensed therapists and substance abuse counselors on staff. Upon admission, each client is assigned a team that includes a case manager, a spiritual care counselor, a family counselor, and an activities director.

Based on photographs on the facility’s website, clients share dormitory-style rooms. Many of the therapy areas are communal and classrooms. Outdoor facilities are also available for specific therapies.

There’s a garden on-site, where many fresh foods are cultivated by the facility’s chef/dietitian, who specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine. In addition, Hoy Recovery has a “temazcal,” or sweat lodge, where meditation, relaxation, and exercise take place.
