ABOUT DICK VAN DYKE ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTER

The Dick Van Dyke Addiction Treatment Center (ATC), located just west of Ovid, N.Y., is a state-operated program that provides short-term residential treatment and education to adult men and women addicted to tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Opened in 1978, Van Dyke ATC also offers gender-specific programming and medication-assisted recovery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, treatment is abstinence-based and “person centered,” meaning that goals are identified by clients rather than imposed by the program itself. Individual strengths, needs, and preferences are taken into account when developing a client’s treatment plan. The length of treatment depends on the client, but it is typically short-term.

Van Dyke ATC offers gender-specific meetings that vary in topic depending on the group. For men’s groups, the focus is on hostility, resentments toward authority, and excessive self-reliance. Women’s groups cover self-esteem and dependency on abusive relationships. Clients also receive individual counseling and attend educational lectures and presentations.

In addition to therapy and education, Van Dyke ATC also has medication-assisted recovery. An on-site physician is trained to provide a variety of addiction medicines, such as Suboxone for opiate withdrawal, Naltrexone for alcohol cravings, and Antabuse, an alcohol aversion medication.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center’s website notes the treatment team includes a medical director and a registered nurse, in addition to a licensed clinical social worker.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Van Dyke ATC maintains 30 beds, and according to one alum surveyed by Best-rehabs.com, private rooms are available. It’s also worthwhile to note that the entire facility is tobacco-free; nicotine replacement therapy is offered to assist clients who smoke.
