ABOUT NORTHERN TIER COUNSELING, INC.
Located in Towanda, Pennsylvania, Northern Tier Counseling is a nonprofit organization that provides mental health, behavioral health, psychiatric, and drug and alcohol treatment services. The Towanda center offers outpatient treatment to individuals of all ages who are struggling with addiction and/or mental health illnesses.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the center’s website, Northern Tier Counseling offers an outpatient drug and alcohol program as well as outpatient mental health services. Treatment is tailored to meet each individual’s needs and may include diagnostic assessments, individual, group, couples, and family therapies.
Therapeutic interventions at Northern Tier Counseling may include cognitive behavioral treatment, solution-focused brief therapy, gradual exposure therapy, grief and bereavement support, and rational emotive therapy. The center also offers various group interventions such as parenting groups and anger management groups.
The center operates open access walk-in clinics each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During open access hours, therapists meet with prospective patients to develop a treatment plan.
Northern Tier Counseling also provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management. The center specializes in treating a wide range of mental health conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to Northern Tier Counseling’s website, the treatment team includes licensed social workers, master’s level therapists, nurses, a psychiatrist, and a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Additionally, peer support workers are available.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing, one alum provided a highly positive review. They gave the center top marks of five out of five stars in almost every category, including recommendation of the center, staff experience and training, and facility cleanliness.
The alum rated the center’s counseling options and cost-worthiness four out of five stars, stating, “They do their best to teach you that you are worth more than you think you are and they give you the tools to work with to live up to your potential.” The alum also appreciated the variety of available groups.
However, at the time of this writing, some alumni who left Google reviews had negative experiences with the center. On average, the center had a rating of 3.2 out of five stars on Google based on four reviews.
Two alumni mentioned difficulties in getting appointments and issues related to psychiatric medications. One alum wrote, “If you are seeking counseling, go here. If you need any help with meds, move.” Another alum stated, “No one will ever return your calls.”

According to the center’s website, Northern Tier Counseling accepts most insurance plans, including Pennsylvania Medicaid and Medicare.
