ABOUT DOMINION BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE

Conveniently located right off I-64 in Richmond, Va., Dominion Behavioral Healthcare is one of 202 (88.2 percent) outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities in the state. The facility provides a range of mental health and addiction treatment services to adults, as well as being among the only 59 (25.8 percent) facilities in the state to also offer specifically-tailored programming for children and teens.

Detox services are not offered here.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

As an outpatient center, Dominion Behavioral Healthcare primarily offers counseling for anxiety disorders, mood disorders, developmental disorders, adjustment and trauma disorders, substance abuse disorders, and more.

In addition to individual, couples, and family counseling, Dominion also offers adolescent group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for insomnia, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), social skills training groups, biofeedback, and sports psychology services.

The center also provides a full range of testing services for children and teens with attention and learning problems. These include ADD/ADHD evaluations, special education testing, and testing for learning disabilities. Medication evaluations and ongoing medication management are also available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes board-certified child and adult psychiatrists, as well as psychiatric consultants, master’s level therapists, and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs). Indeed, 97.3 percent of Virginia treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff. Two individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com regarding staff level of experience and training both awarded this category five out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

All shared anonymously, the three former clients polled by Best-rehabs.com as of this writing reported overall satisfactory experiences. One awarded five stars for the counseling options, the treatment effectiveness, and the staff’s level of training and experience. More critical of the center’s food and lack of Internet, this alum nevertheless considered programming here “very effective” and when asked whether or not they would recommend the facility to others, provided a rating of five out of five.

Another former client gave three stars for treatment effectiveness and complained that, other than a small basketball court, “there was little in the way of outdoor physical exercise,” giving exercise activities just one star. Having attended several other treatment facilities before coming here, this reviewer added: “it ranks in the middle, therefore I could recommend it to others.”

The third reviewer awarded the facility four stars for its treatment effectiveness, and three stars for holistic offerings and staff support, but also mentioned that they were only at the facility for a 72-hour psych hold.

On Google, where Dominion received an average rating of 2.5 out of five stars based on 11 reports, many reviewers celebrated the staff but criticized the customer service.[1] “They are very kind, understanding and professional!!” L.M. remarked; however, S.M. complained, “Rude front desk and awful long waiting times!”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

While Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from the facility’s affiliated family and friends, the sole reviewer on Yelp to date gave just one star, and reported that their loved one was turned away due to inability to pay out of pocket.[2]

WHAT STAFF SAY

The one staffer surveyed by Best-rehabs.com to date provided positive feedback, specifically highlighting the “kind” people and “edible” food. Though this individual gave three stars to exercise and leisure activities and holistic offerings, higher, four-star ratings were given to affordability and counseling options, and five stars were awarded to the facility’s admissions and discharge procedures and effectiveness in treating co-occurring disorders. The anonymous reviewer also sliced through the general stigma surrounding mental health and addiction issues: “Not as scary as society makes it sound. People need to get help and not be ashamed.”

FINANCING

Dominion accepts most major health insurance plans, as well as Medicaid (accepted by only 59 percent of substance abuse facilities in Virginia) and Medicare (accepted by just 49.8 percent of treatment centers in the state).

One alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date gave three out of five stars to affordability, and one staff member surveyed to date awarded the center four out of five stars for its affordability.

  • I'd rather keep my experience to myself, as it is/was very personal.

  • The meals were generally well made and tasty. Besides a small basketball court, there was little in the way of outdoor physical exercise. It would have been pleasant to go on a staff-supervised walk with other patients. There were too many women on the staff. As someone who was abused throughout my formative by my mother, I do not relate well with women. It would have been helpful to have had a few more male counselors and staffers to whom I could turn. I would go here again unless I found a better facility to enter. Among the facilties I have been to (5) it ranks in the middle, therefore I could recommend it to others.
