Carilion Clinic operates multiple behavioral health programs in Virginia, including at its Roanoke location, which provides psychiatric and behavioral health services to adults and children. Treatment of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders is offered through inpatient and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). Medication-assisted therapy is also available.


Inpatient treatment is provided on the campus of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for adults and at a separate facility for adolescents and children. Individuals in treatment, both in the hospital and through outpatient programs, have access to cognitive behavioral therapy-based individual and group therapy, as well as specialized modalities such as electroconvulsive therapy. Clients living in rural areas are also able to access counseling for psychosocial counseling via telemedicine services in their primary care providers’ offices.


Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The hospital’s nursing staff has received national recognition. According to the health care network’s website, the psychiatric and behavioral health treatment team includes psychiatrists and doctoral-level therapists, some with specialized training in adolescent and geriatric care.


The 700-bed Carilion hospital in Roanoke houses the Psychiatry Department’s inpatient unit, while outpatient services are provided elsewhere on the campus. There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, the one individual polled by to date awarded either three or four stars out of five for four metrics measuring accommodations. These included the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, meals and nutrition, and exercise and leisure activities for clients.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive feedback for Carilion Clinic’s psychiatry and behavioral medicine services in Roanoke. Nine reviews left on Google were evenly split between positive and negative, with ratings averaging 2.4 out of five stars. Two alumni reported difficulty in arranging appointments, along with inattentive or uncommitted staff. Two others praised treatment providers as “tough” but caring. In the middle, a moderately positive reviewer wrote: “Doctors were nice, but could have been more involved.” They also suggested expanding visiting hours and improving food quality.[1]


The one loved one polled by provided a mostly positive review. They awarded four or five stars each for the effectiveness and affordability of treatment, the staff’s level of training and experience, options in counseling practices, and the capacity of Carilion Clinic to provide dual diagnosis therapy. On the other hand, they granted just two and three stars for holistic therapy offerings and family participation, also noting a need for more varied visitation hours.

Two friends and family members submitted reviews to Google, complaining of overuse of medication, strict policies, and poor communication with parents.


The center’s website indicates that Carilion Clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare.
