ABOUT PATHWAYS AT VIRGINIA BAPTIST HOSPITAL
Founded in 1984 and located in Lynchburg, Virginia, Pathways at Virginia Baptist is situated at Virginia Baptist Hospital and is one of the 85 (37.1 percent) facilities in the state that offers outpatient care to adults struggling with substance abuse. Residential treatment is also available through an associated program, Pathways Recovery Lodge, located in Amherst, Virginia. The hospital provides medical stabilization and detoxification services.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the facility’s website, admission into the treatment program is voluntary. Clients can self-refer or be referred by family members, physicians, employers, pastors, and friends.
Clients in the intensive outpatient program (IOP) have the flexibility to choose between day or evening meetings, accommodating their work schedules, family duties, and other responsibilities. The program entails three-hour sessions, four days a week, for a period of six to eight weeks.
The outpatient group sessions aim to educate individuals about practical strategies for maintaining sobriety, such as relapse prevention techniques and improving coping skills. In these group sessions, clients can engage in discussions, share experiences, and develop healthy interaction skills.
Pathways also offers an aftercare program for individuals in early recovery after treatment at Pathways or Pathways Recovery Lodge. Aftercare is designed to support clients in transitioning to a 12-step support group and connecting them with community-based resources that aid in their recovery.

All three alumni recommended the hospital and expressed satisfaction with the facility’s counseling options, as well as its admissions and discharge procedures. One of the alumni mentioned the effectiveness of group therapy in helping them overcome their marijuana addiction. However, one alum expressed dissatisfaction with the facility’s holistic offerings and the level of family participation, while another described the facility as “well maintained.”
