Based in Roanoke, Va., Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare is a community-based treatment provider designed to treat individuals struggling with chemical dependency, mental health difficulties, and co-occurring disorders. The organization’s Burrell Center, operating from Carillion Hospital, provides specialized outpatient-based programs and services for adults, individuals involved in the criminal system, pregnant women, and women with infants.


Upon admission, clients undergo an initial psychiatric and substance abuse assessment to determine the most appropriate program. Adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders are admitted into the Burrell Center’s outpatient program. According to the facility’s website, the outpatient program entails multiple group counseling sessions per week. Individuals struggling with a dual diagnosis are served in all groups.

In addition to outpatient sessions, the Burrell Center also provides a range of psychiatric services. These services include psychiatric evaluations, ongoing medication management, case management, and nursing services.

The Burrell Center’s Program LINK is designed to treat women with infants and pregnant women with specialized case management and intensive outpatient counseling. In addition, the Burrell Center provides ALPHA Jail Services, which facilitates therapeutic communities for men and women incarcerated in area jails who have struggled with chemical dependency. Once released, participants in the program transition directly into the Burrell Center’s intensive outpatient program.


The Burrell Center employs a multidisciplinary clinical team comprised of consulting psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, professional counselors, and case workers.


Although alumni reviews of the Burrell Center are limited, the sole alum review sourced from Google reviews gave the facility a perfect five-star rating, but did not expound on their experience.[1]


The sole loved one polled by at the time of this writing agreed with this positive evaluation of the facility. Out of five stars, the survey respondent gave perfect five-star ratings for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders, the staff’s level of experience and training, counseling options, and the level of family participation. “My brother was treated there and seems to be doing better after attempted treatment at other facilities with no success,” the family member wrote.


Secondary sources revealed mixed employee opinions of Blue Ridge Behavioral Health as a whole. On Indeed, 26 employees gave the treatment provider an average rating of 2.8 out of five stars.[2] Although many reviewers praised co-workers and the level of care provided, some reported low incentives and stressful conditions. “Good company to work for but stressful work,” one representative reviewer wrote.


The facility’s website states that funding for the treatment provider is accrued through a “combination of state and local government appropriations, federal and private grants, and reimbursement from federal agencies, client insurers, and private payment.” One survey respondent did cite the program’s sliding scale fee as a facility strength.

  • Sliding payment scale. Hard to get in to see someone initially. My brother was treated there and seems to be doing better after attempted treatment at other facilities with no success.
