ABOUT PROMISES SCOTTSDALE
Located in the desert northeast of Scottsdale, Ariz., Promises Scottsdale, which has acquired a facility formerly known as The Sundance Center, is a holistic treatment center offering luxury residential and outpatient treatment for men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility also treats eating disorders in gender-separate programs and residences.
Medical detox is not available on-site, but referrals to local detox centers can be provided.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
A residential stay lasts between one and three months, and all treatment sessions and accommodations are gender-specific.
Each client participates in group therapy focusing on topics such as spirituality, relapse prevention, and relationships. There is also a family program that includes weekly groups.
Promises Scottsdale emphasizes fitness and proper nutrition as important components of recovery. Therapies include cognitive beahvioral therapy (CBT), educational sessions, role-playing, relaxation, and recreation. In addition, Promises Scottsdale uses trauma-focused therapies and psychodrama.
Holistic therapies include yoga, art therapy, equine therapy, fitness and exercise, and mindfulness. Residents may also attend 12-step groups on-site and off-site.
For women, Promises Scottsdale also offers disordered eating treatment and specialized programming for sex addiction, intimacy disorders, and relationship issues, developed by a leading therapist and author.
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) has programming Monday through Thursday afternoons, and is designed to build life, coping, and communication skills, as well as work on establishing and maintaining healthy relationships. The IOP lasts either nine or 14 weeks, depending on the client’s needs.
All clients may attend weekly alumni meetings and monthly activities for life.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the facility’s website, the team includes physicians, psychiatrists, licensed master’s level therapists, and licensed addiction counselors. Some clinicians have a particular focus on healing trauma. The two individuals polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility high four- and perfect five-star ratings for the staff’s level of training and experience.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Meals are prepared by an on-site chef. Photos of the women’s facility show an airy, homelike facility with semi-private or private bedrooms, a hot tub in the bathroom, and a patio. Photos of the men’s house display a pool and a basketball court. The two reviewers polled by Best-rehabs.com gave the facility four- and five-star ratings for both the quality and the cleanliness of its accommodations.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Best-rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, and reviews posted on secondary review sites are also limited, but polarized. The sole review on HealthGrove is positive, and the reviewer highlighted the caring staff, supportive environment, and holistic options. “Opened my eyes to new ideas such as equine therapy, yoga and mindfulness mediation all of which I loved,” one user wrote.[1]
The two alumni reviews on Yelp claim that the facility is more interested in money than in caring for its clients (the other three Yelp reviews give higher overall ratings, but they’re from friends and referring clinicians). Alum Chris wrote: “The actual center is quite good, but… you will pay out of pocket and the process of getting ANY reimbursement is very slim. After you pay they don’t care, and wont even call you back.”[2]
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The two loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave mostly positive feedback. Both said they would recommend treatment here, and both gave the facility four or five stars for its family participation and staff experience. One reviewer wrote: “This facility is worth looking into if you need a healthy environment with lots of activities and good food. The staff are well qualified.” However, both survey respondents noted that treatment was costly.
FINANCING
According to its website, Promises Scottsdale accepts insurance. The facility is in-network on some PPO insurance policies and accepts out-of-network benefits from others. The two reviewers polled by Best-rehabs.com at the time of this writing mentioned finding treatment to be costly.
