ABOUT AURORA BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE

Founded in 2000, Aurora Behavioral Health Care operates 14 facilities throughout California, Illinois, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas. The 80-bed hospital in San Diego, Calif. provides inpatient treatment, outpatient programs, and day treatment to individuals struggling with substance use and/or mental health disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Medically-managed detox is available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Aurora Behavioral Health Care’s website, it emphasizes a collaborative, multidisciplinary model of care that is individualized for each patient. Treatment plans are based on laboratory tests, physical and psychological examinations, and clinical evaluations.

Treatment plans may include detox to manage withdrawal symptoms. Following detox, clients are assigned to the residential program. Residential programming includes individual, group, and family therapy. Clients may participate in an intensive family program to resolve family issues that contribute to substance abuse behavior.

Intensive family therapy helps to rebuild the relationships within the family and create sober living behaviors for the entire family. Clients are also encouraged to participate in groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) to further their recovery.

The treatment team also teaches sober living skills including non-chemical coping, relaxation techniques, problem solving, assertiveness training, nutrition, and methods for maintaining personal health and fitness. Both clients and families are orientated to and participate in 12-step programs.

The outpatient program uses the same methodologies as the residential program. Individuals in the intensive outpatient program meet three hours a day, three days a week for an average of eight weeks. Upon successful completion of treatment, aftercare planning is also provided.

  • I went to Aurora numerous times and they did not help whatsoever. The point of that facility is for you to hate it so much, that you never want to come back. They have horrible ways of dealing with agitated patients...This facility is not good for troubled teens and I definitely would never recommend anyone going here.
I was greatly helped by the people at Aurora Behavioral Health facility in San Diego, CA in early 2007. But, before I was really ready for discharge, family members had me discharged. They moved me to Monroe, Michigan. And, although I have SOME psychiatric help here, for my bipolar condition, I am not doing nearly as well as I was from my time at Aurora. I have been wanting to leave for years. The services there, in San Diego were far better. A big reason why I am still here is that I don't know if the streets there would be be safe enough to live on. The Section 8 people took me off the list, while I was still living lived there. 7 and a half years of waiting my turn were suddenly shot to heck.

  • My son was in there 2 months ago and guess what he's he is back again. I assume you need to do something about your way of detoxing. You don't put an addict on another drug. All is seems you are putting a bandaid on the problem.
I took a female Family member to Aurora to detox from drugs and to be stabilized. The people in intake told me that she will stay in Detox from 5-7 days. To my surprise she was there only 1 day, and did not detox at all. She was transferred to some unit. On the 6th day she was released, and she was just as agitated then when she got there. No improvement what so ever! Did not like it at all.

  • It has a great plan for better family communication and deals with addiction contributors as well as the addiction itself. I'm not sure the individual case management is up to par. I noticed some of the other patients felt disconnected and misunderstood.. I do believe this facility as a whole cares about their patients and wants to help. I just feel the individual programs should be on the same page as the organization.

  • The staff were kind and seemed to be prepared for a wide variety of events. Time with the doctors was very limited. I felt like the staff, for the most part were very caring and involved in the wellbeing of the patients.

  • I would recommend this place to anyone for detox; ten days to two weeks. Good detox, good staff, good education and overall a good experience. You don't leave at all. You are pretty much caged in the whole time.

  • It is a lock down facility. You have a roommate. There are group and individual therapies. Most counselors are open to speak with you if you feel more comfortable speaking with them, and are willing to help if assistance is needed. Group was available everyday. Treatment and classes were great, but the care recieved by some staff was less then up to par. I didn't feel ready to leave, returned a second time and fought to stay longer but was unable to due to staff decision.

  • Take their suggestions. I didnt want to at first but had nothing else going for me, they told me the truth about what was going on with me, which I also didn't like at first but this placed saved my life. The counselors are amazing. It was worth the cost because I stayed sober.
