ABOUT HOAG ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTERS

Hoag Addiction Treatment Centers is a renowned healthcare network with two facilities in southern California: one in Newport Beach offering residential treatment, and an outpatient facility in Irvine. Known as the longest-standing addiction recovery center in Orange County, Hoag in Irvine provides partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs, extended care options, and continued support for program alumni.

Hoag offers medically supervised detoxification in Irvine and inpatient services at its Newport Beach location.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with an assessment in order to create a personalized plan that meets the needs of each individual. Detoxification is conducted under 24-hour supervision by a team of nurses and physician specialists.

Hoag emphasizes its patient-centered approach, basing treatment on evidence-based practices. While the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are used in programming, they are not the sole focus. Other treatments include individual and group counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and educational sessions.

The Hoag Addiction Treatment Center in Irvine offers various outpatient programs, each with varying degrees of intensity. The highest level of care, day (PHP) treatment, involves seven days of treatment per week. The slightly less intensive IOP is available during the day and at night: the day IOP consists of six hours per day, six days per week, while the night IOP consists of three-hour sessions. The extended care program is designed for individuals transitioning from a higher level of care, and meets three times a week for up to eight weeks.

After completing treatment, Hoag provides ongoing recovery resources at no additional cost through its alumni group, Hoag’s Heroes. This group offers opportunities for alumni to reconnect at regular social events and weekly group meetings, as well as participate in a one-on-one mentorship program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team consists of skilled physicians, nurses, and therapists.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Laura, the only alumna who completed a Best-rehabs.com survey at the time of this writing, highlighted the program’s strengths and weaknesses. While she mentioned a lack of follow-up, Laura praised the staff, location, and protocols. She rated the facility with four stars for family participation, exercise options, cleanliness, and staff training and experience. However, she gave only two stars for holistic opportunities and available counseling options.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Both anonymous reviewers surveyed by Best-rehabs.com had positive feedback about their loved ones’ experiences at Hoag. One described the facility as peaceful and appreciated the one-on-one therapy, while the other mentioned the great doctors at the program. These reviewers gave ratings of at least three stars for most of the categories evaluated, including holistic opportunities, staff training and experience, and counseling options.

FINANCING

Hoag accepts Medicare and is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Coventry, and other health insurance plans. Private pay options are also available.

  • It was a horrible experience going through detox from prescribed Ativan at Hoag Hospital for a number of reasons. First the treating physicians were DOs not MDs, which explains treatment errors. My Hoag inpatient treating physican was difficult to contact, the neurolist that examined me turned out not to be a neirologist per the Hoag website, I witnessed a nurse) scream at patients for no apparent reason to the point they sobbed, some nurses were constantly on internet or texting which caused patients to seek help from other patients nurses for help, I personally was given incorrect high doses of medications that was caught by next shift nurse. The main support group is the other parients, since most physicians and nurses just see patients as a number. A number of patients made complaints while going through treatment but they went on def ears. Upon leaving my primary care physician helped me redo the tapering off Ativan because my body was in shock from being taken off incorrectly.

  • Staff, location, protocols...No true follow up. The program is comprehensive and much of the staff are in recovery.

I was shocked and chagrined tonight when I attended the continuing care program for families affected by someone with an addiction problem. One of the most difficult things to deal with is the many people who are trying to cope with this problem in their families. A woman who came late to the meeting was escorted out by security for being late when she had had a heart attack a week earlier. The person who was enforcing the time showed no compassion or understanding of the problems that the woman had and actually pulled her out of the meeting for being 15 minutes late - such unkind ndness and heartlessness is at odds with the doctors who actually mediate the session. I hope she gets help and am deeply concerned that Hoag considers whom they allow to have this level of administrative control without compassion in how they treat family members who have already gone through so much.
