ABOUT DOOR TO HOPE

Located in the community of Salinas, Calif., 60 miles south of San Jose, Door to Hope is a nonprofit treatment organization that provides three separate, long-term residential programs. Door to Hope provides specialized programs to adult women, mothers with children, and female adolescents struggling with chemical dependency alongside outpatient programs for men and women with co-occurring disorders. Along with these residential programs, To better serve its community, Door to Hope’s programming is available in both English and Spanish. On-site detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To determine individual needs and identify any co-occurring mental health concerns, clients first participate in an initial psychosocial assessment. If supervision and structure are needed to establish a sober lifestyle, clients may be referred to one of the treatment provider’s residential programs. Each of Door to Hope’s residential programs lasts between three and six months, and their programming blends evidence-based approaches, such as motivational interviewing (MI) and the Matrix Model, with 12-step facilitation to treat clients.

During residential treatment, clients participate in individual and group counseling sessions, and attend educational classes on various topics related to addiction and relapse prevention. To address trauma-related conditions, Door to Hope also integrates a Seeking Safety program track. The facility’s individualized programming may also include counseling sessions on stress and anger management, grief and loss, domestic violence, and self-esteem.

In addition to the core programming, the Santa Lucia residential program designed for female adolescents ages 12 to 18 also integrates a customized academic component into treatment. Nueva Esperanza, the program designed for pregnant women and mothers, provides on-site child care and developmental services for children. Parenting classes and educational seminars on pre- or postnatal care may also be incorporated into the residential program.

Door to Hope’s outpatient program follows the same treatment approach as the residential programs, involving 12-step, counseling sessions, and education. Outpatient programs also incorporate components of the Matrix Model of recovery. Seeking Safety program tracks are available to individuals affected by trauma. While the outpatient programs are designed for adults, Door to Hope does offer an Integrated Co-occurring Treatment (ICT) program for adolescents, which entails at-home counseling and educational sessions.

Door to Hope also offers the MCSTART program that focuses on treating infants for various substance abuse and trauma-related issues. The program uses an initial assessment to identify physical and cognitive issues that may be the result of prenatal trauma and exposure. Then, a collective effort by all of the involved staff and the client’s parents create a comprehensive treatment strategy to help the client develop appropriately in the future. Clients are generally referred to the program by other care providers that know the history of the client and identify potential issues in the client’s development.
