Sacramento Recovery House offers residential substance abuse treatment for chemically dependent adult men and women struggling with substance abuse. Sacramento Recovery House, Inc., operates two of the 785 (54.9 percent) nonprofit treatment facilities for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol addiction in the state of California. The programming is operated according to a gender-specific, social model, placing it among the 51.5 percent of facilities in the state to offer women-specific programming. The two houses, located near the Midtown and North Oak Park neighborhoods of California’s capital, provide supportive communities and treatment based on 12-step principles and practices. Both the men’s recovery house and the women’s, known as Gateway, have been serving the Sacramento community for more than 45 years.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Clients must be sober for at least 72 hours prior to beginning residential treatment. Rehab at Sacramento Recovery House and Gateway House for Women emphasizes peer support, individual strengths, and structure. Treatment programs are 30, 60, or 90 days in length and incorporate individual and group counseling, education, physical exercise, and 12-step participation. Each program addresses topics and challenges specific to men’s and women’s experiences.
Among the subjects covered in therapy and educational sessions are trauma, family recovery, spiritual and emotional well-being, HIV/AIDS, and life skills. Residents may also participate in a work therapy program, meditation, and art therapy.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
According to the facility’s website, Gateway House staff members are state-certified and, usually, in recovery themselves. The executive director holds a master’s degree in social work, and 98.3 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities in California have continuing education requirements for staff.
There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding the men’s program’s treatment staff, but the three alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date on the level of staff training and experience provided high ratings of four and five stars out of five.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The Sacramento Recovery houses have capacity for 17 clients apiece, similar to the national average number of individuals in non-hospital residential treatment centers at a time, which is 18 clients. Residents contribute to the upkeep of the facilities through scheduled chores. Google photographs show facilities set on tree-lined lots in mixed residential and commercial neighborhoods.
All three alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com to date awarded five out of five stars to accommodations & amenities, and one five-star and two four-star ratings went to the facility’s cleanliness.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Best-rehabs.com has received excellent reviews and ratings for Sacramento Recovery House from three former clients, and one negative review from a facility alum to date. The three positive-reviewers all gave perfect five-star ratings for the effectiveness of treatment and the availability of options in approaches to counseling. One pleased alum commented about the staff: “treated me like family from the minute I got there.” This same alum, when asked to list facility weaknesses, wrote, “nothing comes to mind.”
Strong satisfaction with several aspects of the facility’s accommodations was also revealed through four- and five-star ratings for meals & nutrition, exercise and leisure activities, the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance, and policies related to connection with the world outside rehab, from the three satisfied reviewers. The fourth alum, on the other hand, mentioned food as a particular weakness of the facility, and complained about the staff as well. “The staff has favorites,” M.T. wrote.
Still, one of the anonymous, satisfied alum, remarked, “I have already referred many people. They saved my life and introduced me to AA,” in an overall representative comment.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

However, one loved one posted a five- out of five-star review to YellowPages.com.[1] This individual reported that two family members who had attended the program were successful in remaining sober, and commented, “This is not a quick fix this is a change life and SRA knows what they are doing.”
FINANCING
According to the facility’s website, treatment in the men’s program costs $2,500 per month and fees are assessed on a sliding scale. There is no separate information provided regarding the women’s program’s costs. The facility’s HealthGrove page also suggests that state insurance (other than Medicaid) and Access to Recovery (ATR) Vouchers are accepted. All three alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com indicated that they considered treatment to be worth the cost.
