ABOUT SUPPORT SYSTEMS HOMES

Founded in 1990 by two Northern California men living in recovery from chemical dependency and substance abuse, Support Systems Homes (SSH) provides comprehensive treatment for addiction with an emphasis on affordability and empathy. Services include residential and outpatient care, treatment for co-occurring disorders, transitional housing, family support, and free lifetime aftercare following successful completion of an SSH program. SSH facilities include more than a dozen sober living homes in Santa Clara County and a residential rehab center. On-site detoxification services are available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The first step toward receiving help at SSH is an online assessment, followed by more extensive evaluations on-site covering a client’s physical and mental health.

Both medically supervised detoxification and medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine (Subutex and Suboxone) are offered. Following detox, many clients transition to the SSH structured residential program, which includes counseling, medical treatment, education, life skills development, family programs, transition planning, and legal system advocacy.

Multi-level outpatient options are available at SSH – intensive day treatment as well as outpatient sessions during the day and evening – with random drug screenings. Clients residing in sober living homes continue in recovery through in-house meetings. Alumni may participate in a weekly aftercare program, which offers ongoing support and focuses on relapse prevention.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

SSH programs have received the highest level three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for 15 consecutive years. Treatment staff members include a physician certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, nurses, counselors, and additional clinicians. Many are in recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Three residential rehab centers are located in the San Jose area, close to public transportation. The main site is a 32-bed, coed facility near downtown.

SSH has an active alumni association, which hosts an annual picnic and many social events involving family members and local communities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Best-rehabs.com polled three past clients who provided diverse opinions. Two indicated SSH was worth its cost and would recommend it. The third rated related metrics poorly. Similarly, two identified staff experience and training as strengths the other rated it three out of five stars. All three offered negative opinions of the facility’s policy regulating outside connections.

Jeanine wrote: “It was a no nonsense program” and referenced the staff’s empathy, competence, knowledge, and demeanor. Another agreed, writing: “Everyone from the intake nurse down to my designated counselor made me feel like the only thing I needed to worry about was getting better.” However, the same alum suggested the facility would benefit from better security.

Feedback on Google was highly divergent, averaging 3.3 out of five stars based on 18 reviews. Most of the nine five-star reviewers praised the staff as dedicated, professional, compassionate, and well educated. The seven one-star reviewers disagreed. One reviewer claimed that SSH “Saved my life at just the right time!” whereas another warned: “Please, please, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!”

On Yelp, nine reviews (alumni, others) demonstrated the same pattern and averaged 3.3 out of five stars. Most of the top five-star reviewers had kudos for the staff and program, such as Mark, who wrote: “The counselors were great and I would highly recommend this place if you want the best.” Those on the opposite end cited uncleanliness, high fees/money matters, and lack of ethics.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Two loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com offered mixed feedback. One rated the major survey categories both favorably and unfavorably: three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, four stars for accommodations and amenities, and one star for meals and nutrition. However, this family member offered consistent mediocre ratings at best for most of the other metrics, including staff experience, counseling options, family participation, and affordability, and considered the likelihood of recommending SSH just two out of five stars. This reviewer complained about lack of overall space: “Too small and too many people in one room. No detox rooms. The other loved one reviewed SSH in negative terms on Best-rehabs.com, based on their husband’s relapse.

FINANCING

SSH accepts private pay and insurance, including most HMOs and Employee Assistance Plans. Discounts may be available for clients without insurance.

  • My husband went here. I thought he was doing good, but when he came home and one of his "friends" started calling him, he started drinking again. He ended up in prison and I ended up worse. I have nothing good to say about this place.

  • compassionate, home like setting, but lacked security when I was there. My time here saved my life. Everyone from the intake nurse down to my designated counselor made me feel like the only thing I needed to worry about was getting better. I didn't want to leave at the end of my 30 days.

  • I think that the most important thing when you first enter rehab is feeling like the people helping you through detox are competent, knowledgable, and calm. Getting clean is scary, dirty, painful, and embarrassing. I believe that being treated by people who have personal experience with getting sober is extremely important. In the long run people stay sober because they make the conscious effort to but having a strong starting point doesn't hurt. It was a no nonsense program for people who were serious about getting sober.
