ABOUT WESTCARE CALIFORNIA
WestCare California, located in Fresno, Calif., offers residential and outpatient treatment, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), to men, women, and adolescents struggling with substance abuse. The WestCare Foundation runs several substance abuse treatment centers located throughout the state. WestCare Fresno also offers case management, day reporting, and sober living.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Both short-term and long-term residential treatment options are available for adults. Clients participating in the short-term residential program can expect to stay at WestCare for up to 31 days, while those opting for long-term care can expect treatment lasting up to 180 days. Adult inpatient programming is gender-specific and uses a 12-step approach that incorporates individual and group counseling, education, job training, mental health treatment, and family services. There is a focus on relapse prevention and HIV/AIDS education.
Specialized programs are provided to criminal justice participants to help them navigate the legal requirements of treatment and associated legal procedures.

The treatment team includes job coaches, substance abuse counselors, and counseling technicians.

WestCare Foundation is a health and human services nonprofit and does not advertise any unique recreational activities or spa-like amenities.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
At the time of this writing there have been eight alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com. Clients report positive experiences with WestCare Fresno. Best-rehabs.com surveys revealed that five alumni gave the highest average rating of 4.2 out of five stars for the affordability of the program and availability of payment plans, scholarships, or financial assistance that was made available. They also gave four stars for how clean and well maintained the facility was and four stars for the ability of family and loved ones were able to participate in treatment through facility programming. The group gave the lowest average rating of 3.5 stars for the variety of counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference and 2.8 stars for the quality of holistic offerings available at the facility.
Many alumni felt that strengths of the facility included that it was structured, it provides a good foundation for recovery, and has good food. Alumni expressed several areas of improvement for the facility, including the temperature of the rooms, the facility being constantly understaffed, and that clients are asked to clean. One alum, who reported she sought treatment at WestCare twice, said, “I got what I wanted and needed both times…I also made some sober connections and now have people I can call when I need to.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
At the time of this writing there have been four friends or family members polled by Best-rehabs.com. Surveys revealed that the four loved ones gave the highest average rating of 4.75 out of five stars for the experience and level of training of the facility staff. They also gave 4.5 stars each for the fairness of the facility’s cell phone and visitation policy and the ability of family and loved ones to participate in treatment through facility programming. how clean and well maintained the facility was and four stars for the ability of family and loved ones were able to participate in treatment through facility programming. The group gave the lowest average rating of three stars for the variety of counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference and 2.25 stars for the quality of holistic offerings available at the facility.
Several reviewers felt that a strength of the facility was the experience and kindness of their counselors; another loved one added that they allow clients to “phase up” to find employment or got to school. Respondents felt that the facility could improve upon the exercise equipment and recreational opportunities offered to clients. One loved one said, “This program offers the client to become involved in responsible duties while in treatment, such as an opportunity to become house manager. This facility offers excellent client/counselor groups as well as family groups. This facility houses men and women (no contact policy). This facility accepts mothers with children or fathers with children.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
At the time of this writing, there were two former staff members polled by Best-rehabs.com. One reviewer gave the facility excellent marks across several different metrics, and the other reviewer gave the facility very poor marks. The first anonymous staff member gave the facility five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, five stars for accommodations & amenities, and five stars for meals & nutrition. This employee agreed that there are many counseling options for clients to choose from, agreed that the facility is well-equipped to treat co-occurring mental health conditions, and agreed that facility staff are experienced and well-trained.
The other reviewer, K.W., said he was an executive staff member at the facility for one to five years and worked full time at this private, nonprofit facility. K.W. gave the facility the lowest possible rating of one out of star when asked if management was willing to put patients’ interests first. He gave a neutral response regarding the overall quality of leadership at WestCare Fresno.
K.W. did not comment on any strengths of the facility. Regarding weaknesses he wrote, “no ongoing training for employees, employees dating patients, classes are not structured.” He stated he would not recommend the facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.
FINANCING
The cost of treatment at the facility is not published. According to HealthGrove, WestCare accepts State Insurance (Other than Medicaid), Military Insurance, and Access to Recovery (ATR) Voucher.[1]
