ABOUT CANOPY COVE EATING DISORDER TREATMENT CENTER

Set on a 55-acre campus, surrounded by open pastures, rolling hills, and oak trees, Canopy Cove of Tallahassee, Fla. provides residential treatment programs for adult women and adolescent females struggling with eating disorders, as well as co-occurring disorders. Operating for more than 25 years, this Christian-based treatment provider also offers a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adult and adolescent males. Although clients must commit to at least 30 days of treatment, individuals progress through the eating disorder programs at their own pace.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To be admitted, clients participate in an initial evaluation via phone to ensure Canopy Cove is appropriate. They then undergo an on-site psychiatric evaluation to help clinicians form an individualized plan. Treatment is based on The Recovery Model, which views eating disorder as a manifestation of deeper causes that can be resolved to generate a full, lasting recovery.

Utilizing evidence-based treatment approaches and faith-based values, Canopy Cove treats a wide range of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating, and eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). In addition, treatment addresses co-occurring disorders, such as depression, self-harm, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anxiety, which may contribute to unhealthy relationships with eating.

During residential treatment, clients adhere to a structured schedule of weekly individual counseling sessions, daily group counseling, educational classes, dietary counseling, and nutrition workshops. Canopy Cove also offers family counseling sessions, during which clinicians facilitate an understanding of eating disorders and their causes, as well as address conflict resolution, healthy communication skills, and anger management.

Along with core programming, clients participate in experiential and recreational therapies, including equine therapy, therapeutic field trips, body movement, and artistic expression. As a faith-based program, clients may engage in spirituality groups, Bible study, devotionals, and worship services. According to the facility’s website, each day consists of 14 treatment sessions.

Once clients complete residential treatment, they may transition to the PHP; as needed, Canopy Cove arranges supportive housing and transportation. PHP clients receive eight hours of treatment on weekdays and six hours on weekends. Similarly, after the PHP, clients may choose to “step-down” into outpatient treatment. An affiliated service provider on the facility’s campus operates an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and outpatient program (OP).
