Georgia Southern University – Center for Addiction Recovery, located in Statesboro, Ga., offers outpatient recovery support to university students in long term recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction. The program averages 40 students who attend weekly seminars and receive other benefits through the program.


The average age of students participating in the program is 24 years old and the average length of sobriety is 2.4 years. According to the facility’s website, most students take around 12 credit hours per semester and work an average of 18 hours per week in an on- or off-campus jobs.

Students interested in receiving services from the center must apply for admission. They must be sober for at least six months at the time of application. After completing the online application, the program coordinator will complete an interview. Students must provide three letters of recommendation that speak to their commitment to sobriety. These letters can come from sponsors, counselors, probation officers, etc.

Students involved with services at the center attend weekly seminars that help to build community and develop life skills. These seminars last one hour and occur in a small group setting with varying topics such as academics, personal achievement, health and wellness, discernment, and spirituality.

Participants may also participate in other opportunities including leadership retreats, sober study abroad programs, community service speakers and alcohol peer educators, and host an “All Recovery Night” on the third Wednesday of every month. All Recovery Night is held to encourage communication and openness amongst different recovery communities.

Finally, participants also receive individualized academic advising and early registration to help them in achieving their academic and recovery goals and balance their busy schedules. Scholarships may also be available to those who have shown excellent academic achievement, financial need, and a commitment to recovery.


The program is overseen by the director and program coordinator whose credentials are not available. One alum polled by at the time of this writing strongly agreed that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained.


At the time of this writing there has been one alum polled by The anonymous alum gave the center and excellent review across several metrics including five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations & amenities, and meals & nutrition. The alum strongly agreed that there were many counseling options to choose from depending on the client’s preference; that the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders; and that the treatment and services offered at the facility were worth the cost.

The respondent felt that a strength of the facility was the groups and discussions. She did not identify any weaknesses and also added that, “Everything was very well organized and the caregivers were great.” Overall, she strongly agreed when asked if she would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab.

It appears there is no cost associated with participation in the center’s program for those who are accepted. Program participants may be eligible for scholarships to help cover tuition costs.
