ABOUT AWAKENINGS COUNSELING CENTER
Located in southwestern Merrillville, Ind., Awakenings Counseling Center is one of Indiana’s 78 private, for-profit rehab facilities offering outpatient care and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for substance abuse, as well as mental and behavioral co-occurring disorders. Specialized services are offered for gender issues and spiritual difficulties. Detox services are not available on site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The center provides assistance with substance use disorder and compulsive gambling alongside a range of mental, emotional, and behavioral health disorders. This includes relationship difficulties, sexual abuse, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, anger, gender questions, and spiritual problems. In Indiana, 51.6% of facilities provide treatment and assistance in dealing with domestic violence.
Awakenings offers counseling at two intensities: intensive outpatient (IOP) and general outpatient. Therapy is provided in individual, couple, family, and group settings. The availability of group counseling is based on the number of other participants with the same disorders. Some of the conditions addressed during treatment are trauma-focused like abuse and domestic violence.
Specialized courses are available to address a range of co-occurring issues and conditions. Aside from abuse and violence, there are programs that focus on gender issues, stress, anxiety, and depression.
Education is a major component of treatment at Awakenings. A range of educational courses is offered on a variety of topics, including sober living skills, anger management, conflict mediation skills. In addition, family educational services are made available too including child custody, parenting skills, and common childhood issues.
STAFF CREDENTIALS
The staff at Awakenings includes a marriage and family therapist, a pastoral counselor, and licensed addiction counselors. Many of the counselors have advanced degrees and specializations in their respective fields.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
While Best-rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback, secondary sources revealed positive alumni reviews. On Google, the facility has three perfect five out of five-star reviews. On Facebook, the facility has one five out of five-star review. Although written feedback is limited, alumni wrote that they liked the groups and staff members. On Facebook, Jessica wrote that “they will work you on the costs.”

The single loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend Awakenings Counseling Center. “Counseling programs were good… they are nice people,” the anonymous reviewer wrote, despite adding that the facility needed “more activities for patients.” The reviewer gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition.
FINANCING
Awakenings accepts private insurance, although not all services may be covered and some will only be partially covered. A sliding fee scale for uninsured and underinsured clients is available, as well as payment plans at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator. The single individual polled by Best-rehabs.com to date gave the facility three out of five stars for its affordability.
