ABOUT STORMONT VAIL HEALTH
With its flagship hospital in Topeka, Kan., Stormont Vail Health is an integrated, nonprofit healthcare network that provides inpatient and outpatient-based psychiatric treatment for adults, seniors, and youth, as well as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) for adults. Stormont Vail Health specializes in treating psychiatric conditions, though the facility also addresses issues of substance abuse as it affects mental health.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, patients first undergo an initial psychiatric assessment to identify primary psychiatric issues and develop an individualized treatment plan. If necessary, Stormont Vail Health provides crisis intervention and short-term stabilization services for individuals who may be experiencing a psychiatric emergency. Adult inpatient services are available only to voluntary patients.
To promote stabilization, Stormont Vail Health combines group, individual, and family psychotherapy sessions with psychological evaluations and pharmacological intervention. Staff work with clients to help them learn new coping strategies and enhance their life skills. Family participation is considered key to treatment at Stormont Vail Health.
Once a patient is stabilized, they may be referred to a less-intensive level of care to continue treatment. The adult partial hospitalization program is held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Along with a schedule of group therapy sessions, which utilize cognitive and dialectical behavioral treatment techniques, the PHP’s programming also includes art therapy, pet therapy, horticulture, and exercise activity groups.
Stormont Vail Health’s intensive outpatient program, held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, focuses on increasing interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance, among others. During outpatient care, patients continue to receive ongoing medication management.
