ABOUT THE GUIDANCE CENTER

The Guidance Center (TGC) is a local community health provider for Atchison, Jefferson, and Leavenworth Counties in Kansas. Our services include crisis assessments, referrals, and outpatient treatment for individuals struggling with substance use and psychiatric disorders. Established in 1937, our nonprofit center prioritizes the least restrictive approach to mental health care, collaboration with other social service agencies, and culturally appropriate practices, including making some services available in Spanish as well as English.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients experiencing an emergency related to serious and persistent mental illness can receive assessment and stabilization treatment in lieu of or prior to hospitalization, via referrals, phone, or walk-in service. For those individuals who have received a dual diagnosis of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders (such as depression or anxiety), they will be directed toward a specialized treatment track addressing both together.

Outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug abuse is available to adults and adolescents at three TGC clinics. Treatment modalities are determined based on an initial assessment each client undergoes and include individual and group therapy. Families are encouraged to be involved. TGC also offers employment support and hosts community education sessions regarding mental health and addiction.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Members of the leadership team at The Guidance Center include a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, a psychologist, and multiple master’s level licensed social workers. Also on staff are advanced practice RNs and certified alcohol and drug counselors, according to the facility’s website.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former clients polled by Best-rehabs.com to date provided similarly favorable feedback, indicating their likelihood to recommend TGC to others with ratings of four and five out of five stars. They rated the staff’s level of training and experience, availability of options in counseling approaches, and capacity of the facility to treat co-occurring substance abuse and psychiatric conditions all at the same high levels. Each also highlighted the value of their program’s educational components. The effectiveness of treatment received three and five stars, respectively.

In contrast, both also agreed that the treatment environment was not warm. One described the setting as “low budget,” while the other wrote: “It felt sterile inside instead of comfortable and relaxing.” One rated the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep two stars and one selected four. On opportunities for family participation and the affordability of treatment, the two alumni again agreed positively, with four-star ratings.

Four Google reviewers of the Leavenworth clinic reflected even more positive experiences, with perfect five-star ratings from all. Two commented particularly on the staff’s patience and friendliness.[1] No reviews of the other two clinics in Atchison and Oskaloosa were apparent at the time of this writing.

FINANCING

The center offers a sliding fee scale and accepts several health insurance plans, according to the TGC website.

The Guidance Center Reviews

They do a good job of straightening out certain individuals. There are just some people that are habitually not recoverable. They will never learn. The condition was not that bad and I the type of person who learns their lesson. Once is enough.
They are the real deal. If you don't participate with the program they will kick you out for not trying. The state of Arizona pays for it. It's not a "28 day" program. You stay until you complete the program. For me it took 39 days.
Intense group and individual therapy. More family one on one time. It's a 30 day treatment center that helps with alcohol and drug addiction. It also helps people to work through other outside issues.
Started as court mandated but continued after completion of sentence. They take my insurance.
