ABOUT CORE CENTER OF RECOVERY
Center of Recovery (CORE) is a non-profit that serves adult men and women struggling with a gambling addiction. Based in Shreveport, LA, and operated by the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling, CORE offers residential treatment, intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, and continuing care to clients. Neither substance use treatment nor detox services are available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Before admission, clients are evaluated in person or over the phone to determine their histories and symptom profiles.
Treatment includes Gambling Anonymous meetings, goal setting meetings, and process groups. Clients will participate in group therapy sessions Mondays through Saturdays as well as individual therapy. Education on money management and “Red and Blue Book” study time is required. Unstructured personal time is limited but time is built in on Saturdays for in-house community service and on Sundays for movie viewings. Treatment lasts 28 days on average.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment clients will meet four times a week. Loved ones are encouraged to participate in Friday sessions. CORE will refer clients struggling with other addictions to substance dependence treatment, as they lack daily medical staff or detoxification licensing.
CORE’s treatment team is led by an executive director who oversees certified addiction counselors. Staff includes PhD and masters-level certified counselors.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Surrounded by a garden and yard, CORE is situated in a home-like residence offering space for 21 adults. Most clients share bedrooms, although one private room is available for clients with handicaps. Clients also have access to a laundry room. The facility tends to have a split ratio of men and women.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
M.G.C., the sole alum polled by Best-rehabs.com to date, called CORE a “house of miracles” and wrote that the facility “saved her life.”
The facility’s Facebook page, which the facility can manage, shows a great deal of praise from 12 alumni to date. CORE received five out of five stars from 11 reviewers and four out of five stars from one reviewer. Alum Tami wrote in a representative review: “CORE was a lifesaver. The counselors and administrator were so caring, compassionate and knowledgeable!”
Though rating the facility four out of five stars, alum Trudy did raise concerns about the continuing care offered by CORE. She wrote: “I have been very shocked that no one from core has called to check on my recovery process since leaving.”
CORE does not accept insurance or offer financial assistance. The facility’s website notes that they will provide an invoice to file with insurance companies at the end of treatment. However, there is no cost for treatment for Louisiana residents.
