ABOUT HEALTHEAST – ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL
Located in Saint Paul, Minn., St. Joseph’s Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient treatment for adults struggling with mental health disorders and chemical dependency. One of four hospitals operated by HealthEast, a faith-based healthcare provider for the Twin Cities metro area, St. Joseph’s Hospital also offers specialized treatment for co-occurring disorders and specialized mental health care for elderly clients. Medical detoxification from opioids is available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, clients participate in an initial psychiatric and substance abuse assessment to help clinicians develop an individualized treatment program. Inpatient treatment includes individual and group counseling in conjunction with ongoing medication management. According to the program’s website, St. Joseph’s Hospital offers integrated treatment to effectively treat individuals with dual diagnoses, including individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorders. Services offered include assessments and referrals, Rule 25 assessments, relapse prevention, and mindfulness training.
As a faith-based hospital, programs also incorporate spirituality into treatment. One alum polled by Best-rehabs.com indicated the 12 Steps is a component of treatment and that they stayed between 15 to 29 days.
Once a person is stabilized, they may be referred to the hospital’s outpatient program, which meets in the morning or evening. To promote long-term recovery, St. Joseph’s Hospital also offers clients follow-up care and referrals to alumni support groups.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
There is currently little information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, but alumni and loved ones polled by Best-rehabs.com to date submitted moderately high ratings. Four respondents provided a nearly perfect rating of 4.8 out of five stars for the facility’s cleanliness, but respondents gave a 3.7-star rating for its exercise and leisure activities.
The hospital’s website does note that visitors for inpatient clients are allowed on Sundays in the afternoon and evening. Two adult family members may visit at a time, but younger visitors must be arranged for with a counselor. There are 12 private rooms for geriatric clients.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Four alumni polled by Best-rehabs.com at time of writing gave the program ratings of five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, and they specifically highlighted its ability to treat co-occurring disorders. Two of the alumni also cited the staff as a strength. One anonymous alum said: “The aftercare program and counselors were amazing,” and B.H. wrote: “Counselors were Awesome.”
Reviews elsewhere online at the time of the writing were more mixed and tended to pertain to the hospital as a whole and not just the specific services detailed above. To date, Google has two ratings for one out of five stars as well as a single perfect five-star rating for this hospital.[1] There were also 20 ratings for the facility as a whole on Yelp, which averaged 2.75 out of five stars.[2] Complaints were mostly about the ER.
Additionally, five ratings on the facility’s Facebook page averaged 2.8 out of five stars where Annemarie gave one star for their “treatment for chemical dependency.”[3] She wrote: “Came to the program expecting a dual diagnosis program, but found out differently… If they don’t diagnosis, they won’t have to treat.” She also added, “No PSYCH MD or psychologist avail. to patients on site for patients/ request.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Best-rehabs.com has only received one survey from a loved one, and the anonymous reviewer also reported a positive experience. They submitted five-star ratings for the training and experience of counselors and the level of family participation. “Different types of therapy should be used,” the loved one admitted, but added: “It works if you want it.”
WHAT STAFF SAY
Best-rehabs.com has not yet received feedback for the facility from staff members, however, on Indeed, eight ratings for the facility as a whole averaged 3.6 out of five stars to date.[4] Most feedback was positive, though a one-star reviewer wrote that that the place was “disorganized and mismanaged. No chance for career advancement and underpaid.” Additionally, a reviewer who left three stars added, “healtheast is no longer the great place it used to be, CEO made many changes that did not fit with the climate, many people left due to poor management.”
A review representational of what many positive comments indicated said, “Excellent job, competitive environment, engaged management, and an environment that supports on-going education. Professional staff on all levels. Would recommend this workplace to anyone who asks.”
