ABOUT MAYO CLINIC IN ROCHESTER, MN

Mayo Clinic, located in Rochester, Minn., offers residential and outpatient treatment to individuals struggling with addiction to alcohol, prescription medications and illegal drugs through its Addiction Services Department. The facility has been offering addiction treatment since 1972. In addition to receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic, clients are able to participate in clinical trials occurring at the facility to contribute to research on the disease of addiction.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility’s treatment program is individualized and research-based. To be admitted, clients must either call Mayo Clinic to request an assessment for treatment or be referred by their local health care provider. Mayo Clinic is also able to provide treatment for individuals struggling with a dual diagnosis.

The Intensive Addiction Program lasts for 30 days and includes group therapy, individual sessions with a counselor or psychiatrist, education therapies, and personal time. Evenings include programming, recreation and involvement in community self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Throughout treatment, clients may receive Motivational Enhancement, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, spiritual support and mindfulness techniques, and relaxation and alternative therapies. Anti-craving medication may also be prescribed when necessary.

The Outpatient Addiction Program at Mayo Clinic offers half-day addiction services in a four week program. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, lab testing, medication management, and ongoing nursing assessments.

Family members of clients are involved in treatment at Mayo Clinic through regular Family Days. Each program at Mayo Clinic concludes with a three-step aftercare program as well as a post-treatment maintenance plan and psychiatric or psychological follow-up care.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Addiction services are provided in the Generose Building at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Participants in the Intensive Addiction program have private rooms and bathrooms in the facility’s hospital-like setting. Program residents also have access to wi-fi and may use personal cell phones and computers during free time. Treatment occurs on an open unit, and clients are able to leave the grounds at first with other patients and eventually on their own.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at Mayo Clinic includes addiction psychiatrists, addiction specialists, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, licensed clinical social workers, registered nurses, an internal medicine specialist, a recreational therapist, a dietitian, a nicotine dependence counselor, a chaplain, and a neuropsychologist. The staff to client ratio is 1:5.

The reviews were polarized: some clients praised the facility, and others were unhappy with the treatment they received. Seven of the nine reviewers said they would recommend Mayo Clinic to friends or family members seeking treatment. The anonymous clients gave the facility an average of 4.3 out of five stars for staff experience, 3.5 stars for cleanliness, 3.3 stars for family participation, and 3.5 stars for counseling options. The facility received an average of 2.8 stars out of five for holistic offerings, three stars for exercise and leisure, and two stars for affordability.

When asked about strengths of the facility, nearly all alumni respondents commented that counselors and staff were excellent. When asked to comment on facility weaknesses, several former clients said the facility was expensive. Another reviewer added additional commentary, saying, “Great staff, great accommodations, lots of individual attention…the only problem is that it is cost prohibitive for many people.”

The facility received an average of 2.5 stars out of five for holistic offerings, 3.3 stars for exercise and leisure, and 3.5 stars for affordability.

When asked about strengths of the facility, friends and family said they were able to participate in treatment, the facility was clean, and the staff was good. When asked to comment on facility weaknesses, reviewers mentioned a lack of exercise options and need for more outside speakers. One loved one of a client added additional commentary, saying, “Very good doctors, very busy schedule, very comfortable setting.”

In group there were always one or two that would monopolize the meeting. They mixed alcohol, narcotics, gambling, gay guilt all together, so you felt out of place.
They did not want to many family members involved

    Very good about keeping me updated on the treatment of my loved one. I was encouraged to participate in treatment. Distance from home was an issue. Mostly treated the symptoms of the substance abuse problem, not the root of the problem.My husband was told by others in the program that I may not understand him now that he was sober.
