ABOUT GIBSON RECOVERY CENTER

Headquartered out of Cape Girardeau, Mo., Gibson Recovery Center is a nonprofit that operates gender-specific residential treatment facilities, outpatient programs, and medical detoxification services for adult men and women. Gibson Center also operates a traffic offenders’ program and works with court-referred and others involved in the criminal justice system.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with an initial assessment and in-person interview to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Clients requiring detox typically complete the facility’s Modified Medical Inpatient Detoxification (MMID) within three to seven days; those in need of a higher level of care may be transferred to a nearby hospital.

Residential treatment combines the traditional 12 Steps with individual, group, and family therapy, training in relapse prevention, and educational lectures on medical matters and addiction. Length of treatment varies, though all clients learn to develop essential life skills – budgeting, interviewing, and work ethic – in preparing successfully for life after rehab.

Backed by evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI), outpatient care consists of family education sessions, employment services, and counseling.

For clients with dual diagnosis, psychiatric care includes evaluations, case management services, and family outreach, amongst other services. There’s also a drug court program as well as an outpatient program for those on parole or in probation.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Licensed physicians and a full-time nurse practitioner provide MMID; a team of master’s level clinicians and addiction specialists, mental health counselors, employment specialists, and community support personnel work with residential and outpatient clients.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Pictures published on the facility’s webpage depict a modest building with shared bedrooms, a dining room, and a recreational room with ping-pong table, pool table, and books. Gibson Recovery Center sleeps 46; the men’s facility 16, the women’s facility 16, and a third, co-ed facility houses an additional nine.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

All four alumni surveyed by Best-rehabs.com as of this writing recommended treatment at Gibson Recovery Center. As a group, they gave average ratings of 4.75 out of five for treatment affordability and 4.25 stars for the counseling options here. Yet they also indicated that extracurricular programming wasn’t a facility strong suit; the four alumni gave average ratings of 2.75 for the holistic opportunities and 3.5 stars for the exercise and leisure offerings.

Disappointment aside, most reviewers celebrated the staff. “Each and every staff member from the program director to the overnight techs genuinely care about the consumers,” alum Kim wrote. Angela, another former client, appreciated that “most staff are in recovery themselves,” while an anonymous alum felt counselors were “great at listening,” adding, “They made me feel like someone actually cared.”

Feedback also came through positive across secondary sites. On Google, where three reviewers awarded the male residential program at Gibson Recovery Center an average rating of 3.3 out of five stars, one described the center as “amazing.”[1] “They helped save my life,” M.J.R. posted. “They go above and beyond.” The female transitional housing was given a five-star rating by one reviewer, who left no further comments.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Though they felt a need for “more meditation space. Quiet alone time spaces,” the single loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com shared mostly four or five stars for over a dozen treatment metrics evaluated, telling Best-rehabs.com: “Counselors are the best. They understand.”

  • the treatment was successful so far. My husband was able to attend for 21 days, and has been sober except 1 time since then a year ago. Visitation and cost were adequate. location was close to home, cost was covered by federal funding. some of the staff was well trained. Transportation to church was offered. Family was encouraged to visit. treatment was first come first serve for admission on 1 morning a month. different facilities were used based on insurance coverage and this was not made clear to us even after I had already called to clarify. some of the staff were young and in experienced

  • Each and every staff member from the program director to the overnight techs genuinely care about the consumers. Vision House is a wonderful program. They do not offer a sober living program. I stayed the maximum amount of time, which was 90 days. Upon leaving treatment, treatment I had 4 months of sobriety. I just celebrated 10 months of sobriety September 6th, which is a miracle after 20 years of alcoholism, treatment, and chronic relapses. A sober living program of at least 1 to 2 years would be the logical next step for people like myself who can easily fall through the cracks when we go back out in the world, away from the support system that helped us get sober. Though not a designated Christian recovery program, everyone is allowed and encouraged to make spirituality part of our recovery. I attended the church of my choice, and two evenings a week and one afternoon a week, groups were facilitated by a pastor, and a woman from a local church held a bible study for us.

  • Staff are very caring & educated. Most staff are in recovery themselves. They offer a 90 day program for female clients. Its more like a halfway house setting than just a plain inpatient treatment setting. They teach spirituality & tie it into 12 step. Clients earn levels of freedom & rewards such as free time, visits, overnight passes, walking around town, etc. The male clients at Gibson only have a 21 day program. They could incorporate more 12 step education. Exercise or physical activities .

Counselors are the best. They understand. Location for family visits is perfect for most. Building in good condition. They need more meditation space. Quiet alone time spaces. You feel as if they do not give up on someone even if they have to stay longer or come back. You feel you have a mentor and friend. Support.
