ABOUT TRUMAN MEDICAL CENTERS – RECOVERY HEALTH SERVICES (RHS)

Recovery Health Services (RHS), part of Truman Medical Centers (TMC) in Kansas City, is a dual diagnosis, outpatient treatment program for adults who struggle with substance use and at least one psychiatric disorder. TMC Behavioral Health also offers inpatient psychiatric, children and adolescent outpatient, and medical detox services at its other Missouri facilities.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The facility prioritizes immediate access to treatment with open evaluation hours five mornings a week. Clients at RHS participate in an intensive outpatient program built on psychoeducation and individual, group, and family therapy. Medication assisted therapy is also available at the facility, along with specialized trauma-informed treatment, support for relapse prevention, and access to physical health services through the wider Truman medical network.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Truman Medical Center is a University of Missouri teaching hospital, which could indicate that Recovery Health Services treatment teams include medical students and interns. Specific information regarding RHS staff is not provided on the facility’s website. However, four individuals asked by Best-rehabs.com to rate the level of staff training, experience, and qualifications provided an average response of four out of five stars. One alum expressed concerns with TMC being a teaching hospital; he rated staff experience just two stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

RHS outpatient treatment is located in a hospital setting in downtown Kansas City, on a non-smoking campus.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Best-rehabs.com has received survey responses from three former clients of Truman Medical Centers outpatient addiction rehab services, including two who received treatment at a different location from RHS. Data from metrics measuring the facility’s overall treatment effectiveness, costs, and staff support revealed generally strong satisfaction from all three. One alum made a note of the program’s fair price, describing reduced charges and a payment plan arranged in the absence of health insurance coverage. The one aspect of treatment that received low ratings from each alum was the availability of holistic therapy.

On the other hand, responses were split between two positive and one critical regarding the facility’s cleanliness and maintenance as well as how likely each was to recommend the program to others.

While no feedback specifically referencing the RHS program is available on secondary review sites at this time, several Google reviews of other TMC Behavioral Health facilities revealed trends within the system. Thirteen reviewers gave TMC treatment an average rating of 3.5 out of five. One third of these represented the treatment programs as disorganized. One quarter, however, commented that staff members were knowledgeable or hardworking.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one loved one polled by Best-rehabs.com provided a very favorable review. Although they rated opportunities for family participation five stars, they did write that “Listening to the patient’s family” was a facility weakness. All metrics measuring treatment, including overall effectiveness, opportunities for choice in counseling approaches, holistic options, and treatment of co-occurring mental health and addiction conditions received high ratings.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, the cost of court-ordered evaluations is $150. No other treatment fees are listed. Around one dozen insurance plans are listed as accepted, including Medicaid, Aetna, Beacon, Cigna, and United Healthcare.

Since I didn't have insurance, I could've ended up in a much less appealing and attentive facility. Personnel were exceptionally personable with the exception of only one nurse.

  • In an urban area, which was good. It is a teaching hospital and there lies the problem I don't remember much but I do remember the doctors at least bring sympathetic and compassionate.
